James Vaughn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Manchester Funeral Home on Mar. 11, 2026.
James "Orthie" Vaughn, a man of skill and selfless character, passed away on March 9, 2026, at Autumn Oaks Assisted Living in Manchester, Tennessee. Born on September 26, 1935, in Knoxville, TN, Orthie spent his life mastering the mechanical world and finding peace in the quiet of the outdoors.

Known for his gifted hands, Orthie was never happier than when he was remodeling or restoring something, regardless if it was a tractor or a car. He had a particular fondness for working on them, especially with his beloved "Old Alice" standing as a testament to his patience and mechanical talent. When he wasn't in the garage, he could often be found listening to the legends of old-time country music, the only kind he felt was worth a listen.

The timber was his sanctuary. Orthie spent countless hours in the woods, often with a cup of coffee in hand, finding a sense of meditation in the hunt. Whether he was tracking deer, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, or quail, he was at home in nature. In his younger years, he was known for his skill in hunting raccoons, a craft he took great pride in.

Above all his hobbies, Orthie was defined by his generous heart. He was a truly selfless man who believed in the value of helping others. If a neighbor, friend, or stranger was in need, Orthie was the first to step forward, never asking for anything in return. His legacy is one of service and kindness to everyone he met.

Orthie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Vaughn; and his cherished wife of sixty years, Joyce Suzanne Vaughn. His memory will be kept alive by his daughter, LaShae Flowers and her husband, Mike; his grandchildren, Jordan Flowers and his wife, Lisa, and Kailee Flowers; as well as several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Illinois later this summer. Manchester Funeral Home is honored to serve the Vaughn family during this time.
