James Walz Obituary
James "Paco" Patrick Walz, a man known for his humor, friendly nature, and kindness, passed away at the age of 57 on August 16, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Born on June 25, 1968, in North Dakota, Paco was lovingly adopted by Thomas and Virginia "Lisa" Walz. He grew into a life full of laughter and fond memories in the place he called home, Iowa City.
Paco was a proud graduate of West High School and lent his diligent hands to Goodwill Industries for several years. Throughout his life, Paco's community spirit was unwavering. He relished those bright summer days spent by the City Park pool and was an active participant in the Iowa City Kickers and Iowa City Baseball, taking special pride in wearing his bright orange Astros jersey.
His family cherishes memories of Paco extraordinary presence, which made everyday moments memorable. With his brother Paul, Paco turned the family's driveway into a neighborhood car wash empire and transformed their bedroom into a festive discotheque, much to the delight of local children. His adventurous spirit led to unforgettable games of CB Tag, where he and friends chased joy across Iowa City's streets with CB Radios at the ready.
As an adult, Paco's craftsmanship shone through in the delicate work of furniture repair, which he learned under the guidance of his father. Paco was a fiercely competitive gamer often playing well into the night. He never tired of the challenge. Ultimately, he had great love for the independence afforded him by whatever vehicle he had in his driveway and for the mobile home in which he lived the last several years of his life. Having grown up with the challenges of disability, he cherished the ability to navigate the world on his own.
Left to honor his memory and carry on his legacy are his beloved daughter Katie, his siblings Mark, Chuck, Paul, and sister Ruth. Paco was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Virginia Walz, and his sister Jennifer. His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire laughter and friendship in the hearts of his family and friends.
Although Paco's journey on earth has drawn to a close, his story will be told with smiles and affectionate tales of his ventures. The Walz family extends sincere gratitude to all those who provided care and friendship to Paco in his final years, especially his Goodwill family.
In keeping with his wishes, Paco's life will be celebrated privately, without a formal funeral service.
