James Webster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2025.
Dr. James R. Webster Jr., loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the age of 93. He enjoyed living in Santa Fe for 20 years in a home which he built with his wife, Joan Burchfield Webster before she passed away in 2010. Subsequently, Jim and his partner of 13 years, Karla Friedlich, also lived in Santa Fe.

Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 25, 1931. In 1960, after completing medical residency, he served in the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he achieved the rank of captain and received a commendation medal.

After returning to Chicago in 1962, Jim began his career as a pulmonologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His leadership positions there included Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff, and Director of the Buehler Center on Aging. He was also President of the Chicago Board of Health and volunteered for many years at CommunityHealth, the nation's largest free clinic.

Jim is survived by his brother, Stephen; his children, Susan and John; six grandchildren (Eliza, Adam, Ross, James, Anna and Max) and one great grandchild, JT. He was preceded in death by his son Donovan.

The family requests that donations be made in Jim's memory to East End Hospice in Westhampton Beach, NY, and to CommunityHealth in Chicago, IL.
