James Vaughn Wessell, passed away on January 17, 2025, in South Bend, IN, at the age of 47. Born on March 29, 1977, in Kalamazoo, MI, to parents Jack Hinshaw and Diana Moyer, James grew into a man of great character and warmth, touching the lives of all who knew him.
James's life was one of dedication and love. On March 30, 2019, he married the love of his life, Julie (Weiser) Wessell, and together they built a family that was his pride and joy. His daughters, Kaylee Wessell and Jordan (Vernon) Wessell, and sons, Cole Northrop and Kyle (Maryann) Duis, brought him immeasurable happiness. His role as a grandfather to Hayden, Liam James, Emara, Skylar Vaughn, and Alexander was one he cherished deeply. James was a devoted brother to Angela Reed and Connie Wessell, and a respected brother-in-law to Missy Stanfill and Robert (Kerri) Hamilton. He was a fun and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, Meghan, Cierra, Courtney, Kaydence, Dawson, and Ryley. His mother-in-law, Bertha Weiser and father-in-law, Timothy Penley, held a special place in his heart. James was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Jr., and his grandparents, Betty and Wayne Maggert.
For 17 years, James served as a skilled mechanic at SBI Automotive, where his expertise and work ethic were greatly valued. James's involvement in the community extended to his passion for the New Paris Speedway, where he spent countless hours working on race cars and forming lifelong friendships.
James was a man of many interests and talents. Known as a jack of all trades, there was nothing he couldn't fix. He found solace in the great outdoors, whether it was fishing in the quiet of dawn or hunting in the crisp autumn air. However, it was around the grill where James truly shone, cooking for family and friends, and sharing stories and laughter.
Above all, James's world revolved around his family. He was a constant presence in his grandchildren's lives. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and the legacy of that love will live on in their hearts forever.
In keeping with family wishes, cremation will take place, and no formal services will be held. Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
