Dr. James Wesley Whitler, age 77, a respected physician and resident of Jackson County, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 10, 2025. Dr. Wes Whitler graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1965, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1968, and completed his medical degree in pathology in 1972. In 1976, he began what would become nearly five decades of distinguished service with the Schneck Medical Center Pathology Department-a place he took great pride in serving. Throughout his career, he held numerous leadership roles, including Chief of Staff, and chaired the Transfusion and Infection Control Committee for his entire career. He also served on the Cancer Committee, contributing his expertise to improving patient care, and dedicated over 20 years to the Jackson County Health Department Board. Known for his big heart and steadfast commitment, Wes treasured the meaningful relationships he built with those he worked alongside. The Lake & Forest Club held a special place in Wes's heart, especially because of the dear friends he called his "lake family," whose families he embraced as his own. Some of his happiest days were spent on the water, taking boat rides with people he loved like family. Hilton Head held a special place in Wes and Becky's hearts, made all the more memorable by the family and friends they enjoyed it with. Wes was the glue that held so many people together, forming bonds that became lasting friendships. Together, he and Becky were blessed with unforgettable adventures with dear friends, whether to Grand Cayman, Cancun, Sandals resorts, Europe, or wherever life's journey led. A lifelong sports-lover and devoted Cardinal, Wes loved watching and attending University of Louisville games over the years. Always generous, he was a proud supporter of many philanthropic causes. Wes had a deep love and appreciation for music, a passion he shared with his son, Jason, and he especially loved playing songs that were meaningful to him and Becky. His curious nature also drew him to the latest technology, which he embraced with enthusiasm. A true animal lover, he shared a special and loyal bond with his dog, Jenny. Wes's proudest moments were in the stands, watching his children, and grandchildren play sports and celebrating their success both on and off the field including the tennis court – a game he also loved to play himself. Born on November 10, 1947, Wes was the son of Marcus James and Eleanor (Wesley) Whitler, both of whom preceded him in death. On August 6, 2005, at Grand Cayman, he married Becky (Babb) Thomas, and she survives in Brownstown. Survivors also include two daughters: Kelly (Whitler) Isaacs of Goshen, Kentucky, and Kimberly Thomas of Bluffton, South Carolina; one son, Jeffrey (Savanna) Thomas of Seymour; five grandchildren: Willow Renton, Ronin Renton, Clover Isaacs, Blayklee Toler, and Ripley Thomas; two sisters: Helen Banks and Evelyn Chandler; one aunt, Faye Best; and numerous nieces and nephews. Wes was also preceded in death by one son, Jason Whitler. Funeral services for Dr. James Wesley Whitler will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor William G. Fredstrom officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown. Memorials may be given to Schneck Medical Center Foundation or Jackson County Dog Shelter. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc. Online memorials and condolences may be given at www.spurgeonfh.com

Wes's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love touched the lives of many. Though he is no longer with us here, his legacy of kindness and joy will forever guide the hearts of all he touched. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.

Kelly
So sorry for your loss of your father. Sending hugs and prayers.
Your mother and brother Jason will all ways be in our hearts along with you. I remember hearing your father banging on his TV Satellite in the backyard trying to get it to move.
Your father was great to work with in the Lab. He was there to give me answers to my questions of my father´s passing .
Love

Cindy and I are saddened to hear of Wes passing. I worked closely as a physician with Wes at Schneck Med. Center. He was always friendly and if I had an issue with the lab and called he always returned calls promptly and was always very friendly. He will be missed. Cindy and David Dollens MD
