James E. Wohlt, age 77, of Fremont, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at his home in Fremont. He was born on June 12, 1945 in New London, WI the son of the late Leslie and Florence (Bartel) Wohlt. In 1963, Jim graduated from Weyauwega-Fremont High School. In 1968, Jim earned his B.S. in Animal Husbandry from Kansas State University and went on to work in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Kentucky as a research assistant. In 1969, Jim was drafted into the US Army and served as a US Army Preventive Medicine Specialist, where he conducted insect and rodent surveys and directed control measures while assigned to a survey team in Korea. On August 22, 1971, James married JoAnn Yingling and together they had three children, Leigh, Brian, and Karl. After Jim's service with the US Army, he worked as a research assistant in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Maine until 1973. From 1973-1976, Jim worked as a research assistant at the University of Illinois. By 1977, Jim was a research associate in the Department of Dairy Sciences where they evaluated thermophilic methane production from dairy cattle waste. On November 14, 1977, Jim was appointed as assistant professor at Rutgers University and attained the position of Professor Emeritus in 1994 and continued to teach until retiring in 2010. In 1981, Jim's wife, JoAnn, died unexpectedly. He later married Isobel Rogers on July 19, 1985 and Jim's family grew with the addition of her children, Rainer, Danielle and Derek. Isobel preceded him in death on December 31, 2008. After retiring, Jim moved back to Fremont, where he helped to take care of his mother at her home until she passed away in 2019. Jim continued his love of the land and agriculture and spent his time trapping, hunting, gardening, and working on his hobby farm. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church as well as Fremont-Wolf River American Legion Post 391.
James is survived by his children, Leigh (Shawn) Weed, MD; Brian (Ellen) Wohlt, NJ; Karl (Bethany) Wohlt, Pine River, WI; Rainer (Meredith) Rogers, NJ; Danielle Rogers, WA; and Derek Rogers, NJ; his grandchildren Mabel Grace Wohlt, Jack Leydon Wohlt, Makana Grace Wohlt and McKinlee Joy Wohlt; his brother, Jerome Wohlt, Fremont; niece, Katrina (Tony) Dering, Fremont; three nephews, David (Tammy) Wohlt, Marion; Michael (Rachelle) Wohlt, New London and Daniel (Michele) Wohlt; a sister-in-law, Judy (Rick) Now, and their children, Landon, Logan and Lindsey; great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, JoAnn, his second wife, Isobel and a sister-in-law, Kathe Wohlt.
Funeral Ceremony followed by military rites will be held on Monday, July 25, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church, 8580 37th Ave., Fremont. Pastor Loren Fritz will officiate. A private family burial in Aniwa Cemetery will immediately follow. Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Monday, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.
