Jan Marie (Rasmussen) Carter was born to Theodore and Anna (Krol) Rasmussen in Vermillion, SD on January 12, 1956. Jan was the youngest of five siblings, Morris, Maynard, Leonard and Colleen. She graduated from Vermillion High School in 1974 then attended Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, IA and the University of South Dakota.
On December 29, 1983, Jan married the love of her life, Robert Carter, and moved to Gregory, SD. Together they raised their three children, Chad William, Nichole Dawn and Cole Robert whom she adored. Anyone who knew Jan, knows she was a devoted Gregory Gorilla fan. She spent many years in the stands watching and supporting her children whom she was so proud of.
Jan worked as a secretary at the Gregory United Methodist Church and also enjoyed teaching Sunday School where she could share her love of God with others. Jan started working for Avera Medical Clinic in 1990 where she remained until her retirement in 2023. Her smile and quick wit were sure to brighten your day. She was always striking up conversations and made many wonderful friends along the way. Jan enjoyed scrapbooking and making treats for her family and friends. No one ever went hungry when she was around. Jan was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many.
A highlight of Jan's life were her six grandchildren. She loved watching them play sports and was their biggest fan and loudest cheerleader. She was known as Grandma Jan by their teammates and families.
Jan passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 68.
Jan is survived by her children: Chad (Kara), Nichole (Marlon) and Cole; grandchildren: Cooper, Cayden Carson, Marasia, Marielle, and Antonio; siblings: Morris (Marian) Rasmussen, Leonard (Sharon) Rasmussen, and Colleen Ricklefs; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carter; her parents, Theodore and Anna Rasmussen; and her brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Judy Rasmussen.
