Janice "Jan" Heckathorn
May 1, 1960 – March 13, 2025
Jan Heckathorn, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, surrounded by family and love. She was born on May 1, 1960, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Edwin and Frances Heckathorn.
Growing up in a military family, Jan moved frequently, experiencing life in many places before eventually settling in Idaho. She embraced each chapter of her life with resilience, humor, and a deep love for those around her.
Jan was the proud mother of Niki (Justin) Gordon, Kevin (Christina) Garner, Nichole (Brad) Wood, and Matthew Landers. Her love extended through generations, blessing 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Sheri (Russ) Garrison, Ed (Stan) Heckathorn, and Robert (Connie) Heckathorn, many nieces and nephews, all of whom she impacted deeply throughout her life, as well as her many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her dear sisters, Betty and Clarinda, and her dear friend Lenell Mitchell.
A woman of many talents and interests, Jan's life was filled with experiences-from working on a farm, where she found joy in milking cows and feeding calves, to creating a warm and welcoming home wherever she lived. Later in life, she cherished her community, especially during the holidays, when she would bake cookies and candy to share with friends. She had a gift for making people feel loved and always found reasons to smile, no matter life's challenges.
On November 26, 2009, Jan survived a massive heart attack thanks to the heroic efforts of an angel named Derek Harroun, who gave her 15 more years to create cherished memories with her family. She never took that time for granted, filling it with laughter, love, and togetherness.
Family was the heart of Jan's world. She loved gathering for dinners-often at Niki's house-hosting picnics in the park, and spending time camping at a special family spot she looked forward to visiting each year. These moments of connection and joy were what she treasured most.
Jan faced life with an unwavering spirit, always finding reasons to laugh and spread positivity. Even in the hardest times, she believed in moving forward, reminding those around her:
"We'll muddle through it somehow."
A celebration of Jan's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor the incredible woman she was.

Jan was my best friend. I so loved talking to her. She was the ONLY person I talked to here at the apartment complex. I really, really miss her. I'm still finding it hard to believe she's gone. I'm still crying whenever I think of her. It will be a long time before that ever stops. She's the kind of person that made you feel you were worth something. She was a very good listener, too.
