Jan Marie Smith died peacefully on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, surrounded by her family. Jan was born in Jamaica, New York on October 9, 1953, and was the only daughter of Vincent Finnegan and Rita Shaughnessy Finnegan.
Jan was a devoted and dedicated wife and mother. She would always be seen pointing out her daughters to her customers. Family was everything to her, and she was proud to have them help at the restaurant. She especially loved her role as Honey to her granddaughter.
After learning the business while waiting tables, Jan took a chance and opened Jan's River Restaurant. She poured her heart into her business, and 37 years later it is still a favorite restaurant for many. Her true calling was being a friend and confidant to everyone she met. To know her was to love her. Jan's husband and daughters will continue her legacy.
Jan was a devout Catholic and stayed close to God throughout her life.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Vincent Finnegan; nephew, Sean Finnegan; Marjorie and Robert Smith Sr.; brothers-in-law, Stephen McKenna, Brian Thomas, Edward Reed, and Fred Sieling; sister-in-law, Annmarie Sieling; and nephew, Maclyn Reed.
Jan is survived by her husband, Robert Smith; her daughters, Madyson Smith and Shannon Walford; son-in-law, Richard; granddaughter, Janna Landaiche; brothers, Sean Finnegan (Loretta) and Daniel Finnegan (Joyce); sisters-in-law Mary Jo Finnegan, Pandy Abrams, Cookie Reed, Maggie Thomas, Jeanne Lachle (Joe), Nickie McKenna, Noreen Finnan; and brothers-in-law, Tommy Smith, Jack Smith, Peter Smith (Tammy), and Bill Smith. Jan was also loved by many nieces and nephews.
Jan will be deeply missed by so many.
A Funeral Mass honoring Jan will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 7738 Barksdale Boulevard, Bossier City, Louisiana. A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Celebrating the service will be Monsignor Earl Provenza.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Willis-Knighton Hospice, especially Jackie Martin and Monica Bailes. In leu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in honor of her niece, Spencer. Memorials may also be made to pmgawareness.org, in honor of her granddaughter, Janna.

I´ve known Jan since 1987 when my parents moved to Bethany, across the street from her. Jan was the first person to come over to welcome them and has remained a close a cherished friend ever since. She was my mom´s confidant and shoulder to cry on when my dad passed in 2020. Jan and all of her family have become just an extension of our family. She never failed to make me laugh. Jan will be greatly missed and it has been my honor to count her as family.

My condolences to Jan's family. My first ever job was waiting tables at Jan's when I was 16. She was so tiny but definitely a strong willed woman and such a sweet soul.

Jan was a special lady and wonderful neighbor. i have wonderful memories of her driving across the road to spend time with Janice and our 3 boys. She always loved to spend time with the children and will be missed by all that knew here. My heart felt condolences to Bobby and the rest of the family.

Jan you will be missed! Thank you for praying for me. Back when I had breast cancer while at the restaurant you came over to talk to me as you always did but you came over and hugged me and you knew something was wrong. You just knew I didn't have to say anything about my cancer, you knew something wasn't right. Rest in peace. Prayers for your family. Thank you for your support.
