Jane R. Brown, 89, of Windsor, beloved wife for nearly 60 years of the late Stanton Francis Brown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, surrounded by her family at her home. Born in
Laconia, NH on September 2, 1936, daughter of the late Rev. A. George and Evelyn (Holt) Reinelt, she was raised in
Franklin, NH and was a graduate of Franklin High School, Class of 1954. Jane's father was a Baptist minister and from an early age she developed a deep faith and a love of music.
After high school, Jane continued her education at Bates College in Lewiston, ME where she majored in education. While at Bates, Jane met Stanton Brown, the son of a Shade Tobacco farmer from
Windsor, CT, and the two started dating. After Jane graduated, she and Stanton were married on June 21, 1958, at her father's church, Franklin Baptist Church, and the young couple moved to Windsor where Stanton had joined his family on their farm.
Jane taught at the Chaffee School for Girls in Windsor until she and Stanton started a family. She immediately immersed herself in her new community, serving on numerous boards and committees over the years including several at her church, the Poquonock Community Church in the Poquonock section of Windsor. Jane was asked to join the board of directors of Windsor Bank and later became the first woman member of CoBank the National Agricultural Bank. Always supportive of her husband, Jane was heavily involved in her family's business and started Brown's Harvest in 1978, expanding the farm's business from tobacco into pumpkins and strawberries. Jane was well-known for her pies, and her family and friends looked forward to her specialties, strawberry rhubarb and pumpkin praline pies which she made fresh from the produce of her farm.
Throughout her life, Jane's focus continued to be on her faith and her family. She served on various boards and committees at Poquonock Community Church, she sang in the choir on Sundays, and she spent several years serving on the finance board, on the executive council, and as the church treasurer. Her children all fondly remember their mother softly playing hymns and songs on the piano after she put them to bed as children. She traveled all over the world with her husband, children, and grandchildren, and loved hosting holidays and get-togethers for her extended family and friends. Jane was an active part of all of her children's activities and later loved attending her grandchildren's sports, plays, concerts, and school events. For over 45 years, Jane and Stanton enjoyed spending winters in
Nokomis, FL where they were both very involved in the tennis community. They also enjoyed boating together and spending time with the many friends they made from all over the United States.
She leaves three children, Kathleen B. Martin and her husband James Martin, Kevin J. Brown and his partner, Mary Jane Quagliaroli, and Susan B. Connor and her husband John J. Connor, III all of Windsor; four grandchildren, Pierce James Martin, Drew E. Martin, Alexandria J. Connor, and Austin J. Connor all of Windsor; a sister, Joy R. Adams and her husband Duane of Bloomfield; a niece, Heather Adams of East Granby; a great-niece, Emma Beman of Denver, CO; two great-nephews, Cullen Beman and Kieran Beman both of East Granby; and her beloved grand dogs, Jax and Ozzy. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Mark Brown.
Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 23, 10-11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave., Windsor. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Poquonock.
