Jane Walker Payne of Greensboro and Jamestown, passed away peacefully on February 7th at the
age of 76 after battling Alzheimer's and pneumonia. She was predeceased by her son Andrew, her
brother Robert and her parents.
Jane was born on January 24,1950 to Pearl and Al Walker in
Asheboro, North Carolina. She
graduated from Asheboro High School in 1968. She also graduated from UNC Charlotte with a BA in
Political Science and was president of her Senior class.
Jane later became a North Carolina State Bar Certified Paralegal, working for Brooks, Pierce,
McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP for over 30 years. She worked with her attorneys on
transportation and logistics company clients, especially Norfolk Southern Railroad. She was often
her company's liaison between local governmental agencies and the firm's railroad clients and was a
Certified Railroad Crossing Investigator. Jane was also a member of the Governor's Transportation
Advisory Board and served as chair of the Greensboro Transit Authority's Board of Directors for two
years. In 2006 Jane was awarded one of the six Women of Achievement Awards, being recognized
for her contributions in the Government category.
Jane's biggest passion was being the mother to her son Andrew. She followed all of his sports
teams growing up, often being the photographer or scorekeeper and was a PTA President at Page
High School. Having many hobbies, she served as past President of the Piedmont Doll Club and the
Jamestown Historical Society and was often found doing family genealogy.
Jane was always known for her incredible attention to detail and her "take charge" personality. She
loved her family and friends, horses, trains, Bunco and history. She will be deeply missed.
Her family would like to thank the superb assistants at Heritage Greens and Verra Springs and
Authoracare Collective Hospice. They were always more than caring.
She is survived by her sisters Pam Walker Watkins of Wilmington and Dana Walker, of Sopchoppy,
Florida, nieces Casey and Airlie Watkins, nephews, Jud and Bryce Watkins, her cousins, and the
Gallimores.
The funeral will be held at Triad Funeral & Cremation at 2110 Servomation Rd.,
Greensboro, NC on
Sunday, February 15 at 1:30 pm. The family will receive visitors afterwards. In lieu of flowers the
family suggests donations be made to Authoracare Collective Hospice of Greensboro.
