Janet Bortlein Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by G.H. Herrmann Funeral Homes - Madison on Feb. 25, 2026.
Janet Louise (O'Donnell) Bortlein passed into eternal life on February 23, 2026. Born on June 10, 1934, to Charles & Martha O'Donnell in Indianapolis, Indiana, Janet attended Assumption Grade School and St. Mary's High School, where she developed lifelong friendships.

Alongside her dedication to raising her family, Janet devoted 53 years to her career at the Marion County Public Health Department. During her tenure, she served various roles - Tuberculosis Aide, OB Clinic Technician, and most recently, Community Health Worker at the South District Health Office, until she retired in 2022 at the age of 87. Janet cared for generations of Marion County residents and made a lasting impact on the health of the residents of Marion County.

In keeping with her Irish heritage, Janet never knew a stranger. She made everyone that she came in contact with feel comfortable and welcome. Although Janet had her own family, many others considered her and called her "Mom" and "Grandma Janet."

She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, cheerful warmth, love of special holiday celebrations and making countless jars of jelly and jam at Christmas time for family and friends.

Janet's pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Martha O'Donnell; brother, John O'Donnell; and her son, David L. Bortlein.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Bob) Warden; two granddaughters, Kimberly Marucheau and Morgan (Blair) Carter; three great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Alexander and Westen; and two great-great-grandchildren, Hudson and Zuriya.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 27 from 4-8pm at G.H Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 5141 Madison Ave, Indianapolis IN. A private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
