Janet Coffin Obituary
Janet Coffin, age 90, a native and lifelong resident of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts and a devoted mother, nana, great- grandmother, and aunt passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, surrounded by family.
Janet was born on February 8, 1935, on Nantucket Island to Frank and Catherine Conway and was raised on the island she cherished. She attended Nantucket High School graduating in 1952. After high school she attended Cornell University, Green Mountain College, and finally Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse. Janet dedicated more than 35 years of her life to caring for the people of Nantucket at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Her steady hands, gentle heart, and unwavering commitment to her patients made her a comforting presence to generations of island families. She worked alongside her cherished friend Suzanne Sullivan for many of those years.
Family was the center of Janet's entire life. She was the loving mother of three children, Lynn, Pamela, and Stephen who predeceased her in 2019. Her deep and enduring love for her children shaped every chapter of her life. She was also devoted to supporting the island community. In her limited free time, she volunteered on election days, registered voters at Our Island Home and she worked for periods of time over the years as a court officer at the Nantucket District Court, and at the Coffin family's golf course Siasconset Golf Course. She also strongly supported other island parents who were raising and nurturing children with disabilities. Aside from her family, she was very devoted to the Catholic faith community at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Isle.
Sports were always important to Janet having grown up with so many brothers. She was an avid basketball player in high school. She enjoyed her bowling team for many years. Her love of sports was legendary, and she seldom missed a Nantucket Whalers football game, or a Patriots, Red Sox, or Celtics game. She treasured time spent gathered with family and friends and found joy in simple things. Janet's bright smile, laughter, keen sense of humor and twinkling blue eyes will always be remembered by her those who knew and loved her.
Janet leaves behind her daughter Lynn Brendemuehl and son in law Steven, her daughter Pamela Coffin, her granddaughters Kathryn Brendemuehl and Kelsey Siciliano and her husband James, and her adored great- granddaughter Madelynn Grace Siciliano who brought her endless joy in her later years. She is also lovingly remembered by Robert Coffin and his wife Brenda Williams and many nieces and nephews in the Coffin and Conway families, dear friends, and countless other lives she touched in Nantucket, Natick, and at the Carriage House at Lee's Farm in Wayland MA where she spent the final year of her life.
Janet is predeceased by her beloved and adored son Stephen Miller Coffin, her parents, her siblings, Florence Conway Ott, Stanley "Bush" Conway, Paul Conway, Donald Conway, and John Syndney Conway.
Janet's legacy is one of quiet strength, selfless care, love, and devotion to her family, her Catholic faith, and to the beautiful island of Nantucket that was always her home.
