Janet J. Elliott, 90, of Scotia, NY, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She had been a resident since January 11, 2019, when she suffered a stroke and required rehabilitation services.
Born on February 21, 1935, in Schenectady, NY, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Madeline L. (DeGuerre) Jackson. She leaves a sister-in-law, Sally Jackson Marchessault of Gaithersburg MD, (husband Thomas), a nephew Sean Jackson, his wife, Corrie Nixon Jackson, a great-nephew, Zachary Jackson, and a great-niece, Madeline Jackson, all of Gaithersburg MD. Her brother, John Jackson died in 1972 in an auto accident. She was married to Marion Bellefield (Bud) Elliott from 1953 until 1977. Janet was preceded in death by her long-time friend, David Utter, who died March 17, 2025, in Gansevoort NY. During her time at Baptist Health, Jan was lovingly supported by her dear friend Terri Roben, whose consistent visits were of great comfort to her.
Jan was a 1953 graduate of Nott Terrace High School and the Albany Business Collage Secretarial School. After graduating High School and Business College, Jan worked for The General Electric Company as a secretary. Janet graduated from the Bellevue School of Nursing as an RN. She continued her education in nursing and went onto graduate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and earned her degree in Psychiatric Nursing. Jan started working for The New York State Health Department as a Visiting Nurse where she worked for a number of years, providing aid to those in the Schoharie county area.
She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady.
She was a passionate supporter of women's and human rights and an active member of Schenectady Neighbors for Peace and Women Against War. Jan loved hiking, skiing, sailing and being outdoors and was active for many years in the Schenectady Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Mohawk Valley Hiking Club, and the Schenectady Wintersports Club.
She loved folk music and film, her cats, her dogs, and her sweet home in Rotterdam, NY. She was a good neighbor and friend, always ready to lend a hand to someone in need.
Services for Janet will take place at the family's convenience. Memorial contributions can be made in Janet's name to The Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady.
