Janet A. Harris, 88, of Gastonia, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home under the care of her daughter, Saturday, September 14, 2024.
She was born July 5, 1936, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, daughter of the late Henry E. William Adcock and Nellie Beatrice Smith Adcock, of Wadesboro.
Janet married her husband, Vernon G. Harris, on December 23, 1953. She started her life being a military wife, and student graduating high school from Belmont High in 1954. The military life took her from Fort Bragg, Michigan, to Okinawa, Japan, ending in Fort Stewart, Georgia, in 1969-1970. She then went back with her four children to Belmont. While in Okinawa, she was a civil service attaché to the adjutant General at Fort Buckner Okinawa, from 1966-1969. Her career choice in the US was a secretary/bookkeeper for companies in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she worked at Southern Electric, and A&P. She then retired from Dallas Machine, Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1998.
Janet loved to read, working crossword puzzles, sending cards to her friends and family, baking and sharing her baking with others.
To tell all the attributes of this beautiful, kind, generous, woman of God, would take forever. She was happy to be in the background, but a strong woman of faith, and a pillar of strength, and prayer. She had grace, forgiveness, mercy, and love for family, God, and her country. She also had a special love for her church family at Belmont Foursquare Church, Belmont, North Carolina. Janet was blessed and always involved, mostly in the kitchen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; siblings, Don Adcock, Sue Newton, Barbara Gantt, and two infant children, one who passed during childbirth and one shortly after.
She is survived by her children Rickie G. Harris, Melita V. Harris, Bettina "Tina" H. Steelman, and Janine H. Barker; siblings, Carolyn, Rose, Rachel, Aline, Bernice, Boyce, Joyce, Frankie, and Jerry; grandchildren, Robert, Shani, Zaria, April, Sara, James, Alana, Robin, Emily, Jessie, Millie, Ena, and Molly; great grandchildren, Hunter, Chase, Malory, Carly, Camille, Abbie, Grayson, Hunter, Peyton, Theron, Everett, Elijah, Hannah, and Hayden.
A funeral service will be held 12:00pm, Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Belmont Foursquare Church - 8 Elizabeth Street, Belmont, North Carolina 28012. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice - PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054.
