Janet James, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Janet graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. Shortly after meeting her husband, Kenneth James, they were married in Lansing, Michigan on August 13, 1983, where they built a loving life together.
Janet had a rewarding career as a customer service representative at Set-Seg Insurance, where she began working in 1982 and dedicated herself until her retirement in 2014. Her warmth and dedication to helping others shone through in every interaction.
Janet is survived by: her devoted husband of 43 years, Kenneth James; as well as their children, Norman Burns, Justin (Callie) James, Jarrett (Madeleine) James; grandchildren, Aiyanna Burns, Ivy James and Jalen James. She is also survived by: her siblings, Mike (Arlene) Burns, Jeff (Yong) Burns, Nancy Burns; sister-in-law, Angie (Billy Sr.) Lewis; and a host of nieces, nephews and family friends.
Janet was preceded in death by: her parents, Leo Burns and Barbara Green; her brother, Daniel Burns; and her sisters, Harriet Austin, Karen Sanders, and Rosemary Murray.
Janet's smile and infectious laugh brought warmth and comfort to every room she entered. If you were lucky enough to stop by her home, you were always welcomed with a plate of something delicious. Her world-class potato salad was a family favorite and will be deeply missed at gatherings and celebrations. Above all, Janet adored spoiling her grandchildren. She made sure to always have "tweet bags" on hand, a beloved signature of Grandma JJ, that brought joy to her grandchildren. As a coach's wife, she embraced the role of "Mrs. Coach," nurturing not only her own children and close friends but also everyone associated with the teams. Her spirit, kindness, and dedication will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
