Janet Whitcomb Laktzian was born on April 19, 1945 to J.D. Whitcomb and Annie Mae Whitcomb (nee Levy) in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her education within the East St. Louis public school system, attending Dunbar Elementary, Hughes Quinn Junior High, and Lincoln Senior High. She furthered her education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree.
In 1964, Janet married George Laktzian, and together they shared a loving union that lasted for more than 60 years, and into this union, they welcomed their only child, Anissa. Janet was a devoted wife and mother and later a cherished grandmother to her granddaughter, Bria,
Janet expressed her faith in Christ and became an active member of the Pilgrim Temple CME Church in East St. Louis, where she engaged in Bible study and other activities. She had a burning desire to grow spritually and spent many hours in private Bible study and prayer.
Janet was a wonderful friend who loved God and people. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, often bringing joy to gatherings. She had a deep appreciation for music and theater, frequently attending performances at the Fox Theatre and Powell Symphony Hall,
Family was central to Janet's life; therefore she was an avid supporter of family gatherings such as reunions and any other occasions that brought them together. She also celebrated birthdays with her friends through a monthly birthday club. Her love for shopping was notable-she enjoyed finding clothes not only for herself but also for her friends, often gifting them with thoughtful selections. Addition- ally, Janet had a passion for dining out and was well acquainted with restaurants throughout the St. Louis area, delighting in inviting others to share meals with her.
Janet had a fulfilling career as a special education teacher in the East St. Louis School District 189, retiring in 2007. Before her teaching career, she worked at Associated Bank in East St. Louis, formerly known as Illini Savings & Loan, and Hunter Packing Company in East St. Louis. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards for her dedication and impact as an educator.
Janet passed into the presence of her Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father, J.D. Whitcomb; her stepfather, Earl Johnson; her daughter, Anissa Renee Laktzian; her brother, Willie J. Whitcomb; and her stepbrother Charles Johnson. She is survived by her husband, George; her moth- er, Annie Mac Johnson; her granddaughter, Bria Laktzian Simmons (Adrian); her stepson, George Gregory Laktzian (Edith); a host of cousins from across the country whom she adored; and many other lifelong friends.
