Janet Lynn Matthews, born on February 26, 1961, in Wiesbaden, Germany, was a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew her. Adored for her resilience, she had the uncanny ability to bounce back from life's challenges, standing taller with each hurdle. Janet, a retired employee of the State of Florida's Water Department, was known for her empathetic nature, often going the extra mile to support her colleagues, showing that "A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal."
Janet spent most of her life in Stuart, Florida, but had the opportunity to live in Japan and Germany while her father was in the Army and the Air Force. Upon her retirement, she relocated to the Joplin area and spent some time riding her 4-wheeler. She then moved to Carl Junction, Missouri, where she spent her days making precious moments with her beloved dogs. Janet's love for her dogs was unparalleled, and they were the center of her universe. Janet's independent nature made her the strong resilient woman that she was. She would love to extend a helping hand to anyone that needed it, but would always want to do everything herself. Her supportive and loving demeanor extended beyond her human acquaintances; it was most evident in her interaction with her dogs. Her resilience and empathetic nature were not just human traits; they were her way of life, her philosophy. In her words, "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
Janet leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her father, Daniel Shirley and her mother, Rebecca Shirley; nephews, Josh Weeks of Florida, Patrick Casey of Alabama and many cousins. Janet is preceded in passing by her husband David Matthews and sister, Debra Casey, A woman of strong character and unwavering love, Janet had the unique ability to get along with anyone she met, making her well-liked within her community. Her loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
