Janet Ryan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Jan. 5, 2026.
Janet Ryan, 75, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025.

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Janet was one of four children born to the late Frank and Valeria Kozibroda. In 1971, she married Jeremiah "Jerry" Ryan, whom she met at a dance at William Paterson University. Shortly after their marriage, Jerry was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Germany, where Janet accompanied him. Following the completion of his military service, the couple returned to the United States and briefly settled in Baltimore, where Janet worked in a laboratory at Johns Hopkins. They later returned to New Jersey, where Janet and Jerry raised their daughter, Erin, in Garfield. Janet went on to build a successful career as a legal affairs manager, working for several companies over the years.

Janet had a deep love for the holidays and took great pride in celebrating them with family. Her home was always perfectly decorated, from thoughtfully chosen placemats to carefully selected knickknacks. Christmas, her favorite and perhaps most enthusiastically celebrated holiday, held a special place in her heart. One cherished tradition was the annual pierogi-making gathering she hosted for many years, a labor of love eventually carried on by her brother Frank.

Janet's greatest joy and blessing was her granddaughter, Madison. She eagerly looked forward to their phone conversations, delighting in learning about Madison's current interests and listening with care to the trials and tribulations of middle school life. A truly doting grandmother, Janet's love and devotion were constant.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Erin Vieira and her husband Joshua; her brothers, Frank Kozibroda and his wife Mary and John Kozibroda and his wife Pialani; her sister, Patricia Hendrickson and her husband Ronnie; her granddaughter, Madison. She was predeceased by her husband, Jeremiah.

A memorial Mass will be held 11 am on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at St. Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation.
