Janet Stonoff Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory on Nov. 9, 2021.
Janet "Jan" Aleta Stonoff passed away peacefully in her bed in the cool fall afternoon of November 5th, 2021. She was born April 14th, 1935, in East Enterprise, Switzerland County to Harry Melick Slack and Emza Scudder Slack. She was one of 16 children, succeeding 11 brothers and sisters, and preceding two sisters: Naomi Coy, and Barb (Jack) Freels, and two brothers, Herbert Slack and Orville Slack. She attended school at Frankfort Pilgrim High School.
Jan later met her husband, James "Jim" Colbert Stonoff in Frankfort, Indiana where they were soon married in the spring of April 16th, 1954. Shortly thereafter they had a daughter, Melinda Sue, following a son one year later, James Bradley. Sometime around 1955, they moved their young family to Anderson, Indiana where Janet started a part-time job some years later at Payless Grocery Store. Over the course of her working years, she took an office job at Jay Construction Company, and Anderson Mattress Company but found her niche and settled in at Community Hospital working in the Admittance Department for 15 years before retirement.
Jan always had an artistic spirit - especially with words. She loved passing time filling her notebooks with effortless creations of witty poems and meaningful stories from her contemplations and memories of old. She would submit these cleverly crafted short stories and rhymes to the local paper for others to enjoy. She also loved music and taught herself to play the accordion and organ so she could sing along to the collections of old hymns and songs she enjoyed. Jan enjoyed singing with the "Sweet Adelines" and in the choir of her local church of many years, First Nazarene Church of Anderson. Her grandchildren remember her filling the mundane hours of everyday life singing songs as she would work around the house. Outside of music, she also had a steady hand for cross-stitching and painting beautiful ceramics. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling on women's leagues and mixed leagues with her husband.
Jan expressed so much love in her remarkable knack for hospitality and outstanding cooking. She knew how to "put on the dog" for her guests and relished every minute of quality conversation over the dinner table or gathered in the living room over a strong cup of hot coffee and homemade pie. She brought beauty to everything she touched, never overlooking the fine details.
At the young age of 18 she received Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior and has walked the rest of her 68 years with him at her side, and now has finally arrived home to rest from life's long journey in his loving arms. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Jim Stonoff. She is survived by her children, Melinda (Terry) Songer and James Bradley (Linda) Stonoff; her seven grandchildren, Leslie (Stonoff) Wilson, Jason Songer, Justin Songer, Ryan Stonoff, Jeff Songer, Jared Songer, and Jarryl Songer; and 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
