Janice Evensen Obituary

Jan, age 93, of Stillwater, passed away on February 11, 2026.

Born in Menominee, MI on January 6, 1933. She graduated from Carthage College with a degree in Home Economics. Married Thomas J. Evensen on June 25, 1955. Jan taught secondary school in Delano and Minneapolis, MN and retired from full time teaching in 1960. She spent a number of years teaching Home Economics adult education classes. In 1971, she became a substitute teacher in the Stillwater secondary schools and continued for over 40 years.

An avid knitter, she knitted sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, and blankets. At the high school she became known as the "Mitten Lady" as she knit hundreds of "Ponies" mittens. The mittens had the school logo, the student's name and graduation year. All proceeds were donated to the school. She also enjoyed traveling, riding her bike, and spending time at the lake with family and friends.

Jan is survived by her husband, Tom of 70 years; sons, Brian (Carole), Dale (Kerry) of Stillwater; grandchildren, Brooke (Cody) Hess, Sydney (Pete) Metcalf, Courtney, and Blake.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Max.

Memorial service will be Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 115 North 4th Street, Stillwater. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. and the service will start at 11:00 A.M. A Lunch will be provided following the service. Private interment at Fairview Cemetery.
