Janice Lee Hanas
April 22, 1948 – January 21, 2026
Janice Lee Hanas (née Silverstein), a woman defined by her radiant smile, unwavering cheerfulness, and devotion to her family, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026 at the age of 77. She was a beautiful person inside and out, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and love. Janice is survived by her loving husband, Robert Hanas, daughters Jennifer (husband Elio) Lombardi and Jessica (husband Christopher) Trask, grandchildren Elio, Oliver, Demi and Victoria. Her grandson Nico passed away September 24, 2025.
Born on April 22, 1948, to the late Elizabeth and Isidore Silverstein, Janice grew up in
Jersey City, NJ. Her childhood was filled with the special bonds of her siblings, Daniel Silverstein and Ann Chodash, and a large circle of close-knit cousins. She attended the Yeshiva for grammar school and graduated from Dickinson High School.
Her fondest early memories were spent at Sackett Lake in upstate New York, where summers were defined by family gatherings, water skiing, and the joy of being surrounded by those she loved most.
Janice was a graduate of Jersey City State College. She began her professional journey sharing her heart with children as an elementary education school teacher in Jersey City. Eventually, she and her husband moved to
Edison, NJ where they settled to raise their family and became long-time residents of the community. In her later career, Janice transitioned into the corporate world, with a series of promotions before retiring from a biological science company as the Director of Purchasing and Logistics. Regardless of the role, Janice was known for her aptitude and her ability to build genuine connections with colleagues.
Janice was the devoted wife of Robert Hanas for nearly 53 years-a marriage built on a foundation of partnership and deep loyalty. Together, they raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica and considered their husbands, Elio and Christopher to be sons of their own. While she wore many titles, "Grandma" was her favorite. Her grandchildren - Elio, Nico, Demi, Oliver and Victoria - were her absolute pride and joy. She cherished every moment spent with them, especially during family vacations to Point Pleasant Beach, where the salt air and sunshine were second only to the happiness of having her family together.
Janice was a natural host who loved to cook and host big family dinners. Her home was often filled with the aroma of a delicious meal and the sound of laughter. When she wasn't hosting, she enjoyed dinners out with her husband sharing a bottle of wine. She loved her trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, embracing the energy of video poker and the fun surroundings.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff at JFK University Medical Center. The amazing doctors and nurses did more than provide care; they formed special relationships with Janice, treating her with the dignity and kindness she so freely gave to others. She was always happy, always smiling-a truly beautiful soul who brightened every room she entered. Janice's spirit will live on in the recipes she shared, the lessons she taught, and the immense love she poured into her husband, children, and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
