Richard Michael Hanas, age 75, of Saluda, Virginia, passed away peacefully on the 29th of November 2025.
Born on November 6, 1950, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Richard was a resident of New Jersey. He graduated from John P Stevens High School in Edison New Jersey and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from William Paterson College. Richard was a talented musician and played the drums in the high school band. During his early years in college, he professionally played the drums in a band named “Winters End” along with his cousins. The band frequently performed for weddings and New Years Eve parties at big local venues and in the Poconos. He relocated to Saluda, Virginia where he remained until his passing.
Richard dedicated over 20 years to education, initially teaching at East Orange High School in New Jersey and after relocating to Saluda, teaching shop classes at Middlesex High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves and was activated during Operation Desert Storm as a Staff Sargent, providing vital support to air transport services at Dover Air Force Base.
Richard had an unwavering love for animals, especially dogs, who brought boundless happiness and unconditional love into his life. A man of deep faith and community spirit, Richard was a devoted member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Gloucester, Virginia, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He generously gave his time as a volunteer at the Victory Center in Yorktown, Virginia.
Richard is survived by his loving mother, Marion; his brother, Garrett; and his sister Diane and her husband Michael. His remains will be interred with full military honors at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia, on a date to be determined. He will be forever missed.
