Janice L. Maki, 66, of Gwinn and formerly of Wakefield, MI, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
She was born March 31, 1958, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a daughter of Ray and Delores (Holvick) Nurmi. She was raised there and was a 1976 graduate of Wakefield High School. She earned an Associate's degree from Gogebic Community College and later a Bachelor's degree from NMU.
Janice was employed as a teachers aide and substitute teacher for years at the Gwinn Schools.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, was active in the choir and other church activities. She loved camping, spending time at the family cottage, family gatherings and spending time with her grandkids.
Janice is survived by her sons, Justin Maki of Gwinn, Lee (Christine) Maki of Gwinn and Jordan (Tori) Maki of Gwinn; grandchildren, Gavin, Charlotte and Clara; siblings, Daniel (Jeanne) Nurmi of Channing, MI, Joyce (Mike) Olson of Southrange, WI, Judy (Mike) Caruso of Foxboro, WI, Dale (Mickey) Nurmi of Lapeer, MI and JoAnn Nurmi of Wakefield, MI; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Douglas Nurmi; and infant granddaughter, Evangeline.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 2 pm at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Jack Busche officiating. Burial will take place in the Wakefield Cemetery.
