Michael R. Molby, 77, of Marquette, died Monday, August 4, 2025, at UP Health System-Marquette.

He was born August 18, 1947, in Marquette, a son of John and Gertrude (Sapila) Molby. He was a 1965 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in history from NMU and was a lifelong area resident.

Michael served in the US Navy out of high school and was a Vietnam Veteran.

On January 23, 1970, Michael married Joanne Anderson at St. Christopher Catholic Church.

He worked as a plumber/pipefitter in the construction industry for Union Local 414 for several years. He also served on the board for Local 414. He later took a position with NMU where he worked for 17 years.

Michael was a member of the Negaunee Rod & Gun, the Backdoor Society and UP Runners. His interests included clay target shooting, running, hunting, golfing, he was an avid dog lover and longtime ski racer.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne (Anderson) Molby of Marquette; a daughter, Michelle (Eric) Hammerstrom of Marquette; granddaughter, Alexis Hammerstrom of Marquette; brothers-in-law, Calvin Anderson of Marquette and James (Idell Johnson) Anderson, Jr. of Marquette; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, infant brother, John David Molby and sister, Ann von Segen and beloved dogs, Harley & Rocky.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 from 1 to 3 pm at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm in the funeral home with Deacon Bill McKnight officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. The Marquette American Legion and US Navy will provide military honors.
