Janice Powell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Krause Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Inc. - New Berlin on Dec. 16, 2025.
Janice Marilyn Powell (née Lewke), age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025, in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.

Born on October 9, 1937, in Columbus, Wisconsin, Janice was the daughter of Walter and Clara (Duenow) Lewke. She grew up in a close-knit farming family, carrying with her throughout life the values of kindness, dedication, and faith.

Janice attended the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, where she prepared for a lifelong career in education and met the love of her life, Carl. She went on to become a devoted high school business teacher, most recently serving at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. Her commitment to teaching left a lasting impact on generations of students who benefited from her knowledge, steadiness, and care.

A woman of deep faith, Janice was a longtime member of Divine Peace Lutheran Church (Wisconsin Synod). Her spiritual life was central to who she was and quietly guided her actions both personally and professionally.

Janice shared a joyful and loving 65-year marriage with her husband, Carl H. Powell. Together they built a family rooted in love and support. She is lovingly remembered by her three children: Gregory D. Powell, MD, and his wife Julie, along with their children Matthew, Nicholas, and Meghan; Kevin R. Powell and his wife Sherry, along with their daughter Natalie Simon, her husband Matt, and children Malachi and Diana (Janice's great-grandchildren), and their son Trent and his wife Kylee; and Mary Ann Ceaglske and her husband Steve, along with their children Rachel and David. She is also survived by her brother, David Lewke, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ronald Lewke; and other beloved family members.

Janice was known for her warmth, generosity, and devotion to her family and friends. She loved crafting, traveling with her family, and welcoming people with her characteristic hospitality. She and Carl cherished their time at their lake cottage in Mount Morris. Never one to pass up a bargain, she delighted in discovering treasures at garage sales wherever their travels took them. Her joyful spirit and gentle presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

May Janice's memory be a source of comfort and peace to all who knew and loved her.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Heritage Elm Grove for their dedicated care, compassion, and comfort in Janice's final years. Their support was a true blessing.

A visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin, on Sunday, December 21, 2025, 2:30 PM – 3:45 PM. Funeral Service at 4:00 PM. Interment will follow on December 22, 2025 at Hillside Cemetery in Columbus, Wisconsin.
