Janice graduated from Good Hope High School, then from Western Illinois University in Macomb where she received a degree in education and met her husband. She taught at a country school for two years, then left teaching and moved to Galesburg to stay home with her children. She returned to the workforce when her children were older, working as a supervisor at Bergner's for more than 20 years, where she also did a great deal of shopping. Janice was a long-time member of the United Presbyterian Church, volunteering her services and joining a variety of church groups. She later attended the Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg. She also volunteered at Community Treasures in Galesburg for several years. In later years, she made a daily habit of meeting friends for morning coffee at area restaurants. Her greatest joy was spending time with family – her numerous siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often proudly boasting about how large her family was. Her greatest sorrow was the loss of her youngest child, Karla who died at age 19 after a three-year battle with leukemia.
