Jason Lee Bateman, 50, of Simpsonville, S.C., went to be with his Lord and Savior August 22, 2024, after a recent cancer diagnosis. He was born in Lincoln, I.L., October 14,1973. Jason was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend.
As a survivor of childhood cancer, he developed a strong faith that he shared with his beloved family. His favorite verse was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13 NKJV). Jason's wish for his family and friends was to put Christ at the center of their lives, reminding us all repeatedly in his final days that "Nothing is more important than your relationship with Christ." The Bateman Family's verse is, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares The Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).
Jason owned and operated The Hightower Insurance Agency and enjoyed spending time with his family: whether watching his kids compete in their sports, being a Club soccer referee, deep-sea fishing, or cooking on the grill. He had a love for the Florida and North and South Carolina coastlines. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, off-roading and trail rides with the Tacoma club, roller coasters and traveling with family and friends. He was always planning that next adventure. Jason celebrated life and found joy in simple pleasures such as going to concerts and being the proclaimed family DJ. He enjoyed a cup of Cuban Coffee and a good cigar. Jason valued relationships and friendships and had the ability to make you feel like you were the only person in a room.
Jason is survived by his wife, Sabra Bartlett Bateman; and their children, Erika, Ashley, and Brayden. Also left to cherish his memory are his parents, Cliff and Mary Bateman; his brothers, Matt Bateman (Melissa) and Brad Bateman (Bobbi); in-laws, Walt and Kathy Bartlett; sister-in-law, Julie Rodgers; nieces and nephews, Emery, Aubri, Kyli, Aliyah, Foster, Bo, Bear and Ronnie; cousins, extended family and his beloved dog, Kylo.
Jason and Sabra celebrated their 30th anniversary this year by going on a cruise together. The family enjoyed a trip to the beach with their dear friends this summer just before his illness. On their anniversary Jason wrote about his love story with Sabra: from their decision to get married at a young age when they hadn't even finished college, to the trials of their son's childhood cancer, Sabra's breast cancer, and a second bout with cancer for Jason just months prior. "I don't know if the good Lord felt we just needed a serious testing or what, but I believe He has built our family to survive."
Their daughter Erika calls Jason her best friend and wrote a tribute thanking him for the perspective he instilled in her. "The biggest lesson you taught me is that life is unfair, and the sooner you grasp that, the better prepared you will be for anything that comes your way," Erika wrote. "Although I'm feeling like losing you is unfair, you told me to look back and smile at the times we shared. So that's exactly what I plan to do every day."
Jason's daughter Ashley is also grateful for his guidance. "You prepared me for life in ways I'm still learning," Ashley wrote in tribute to her dad. "Thank you for loving me unconditionally."
His son, Brayden, says Jason inspired him to get to know Christ. "I miss you so much already, but you told us that your wish was no sadness or negativity," Brayden wrote. "You told us to walk with God and be happy in The Lord."
In memory of Jason's love for life and family, a memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Church - Pelham with a time of visitation directly following the service. Blue was Jason's favorite color, so please join the family in wearing any shade of blue.
In gratitude for the exceptional care Jason received, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McCall Hospice House or to the fund to benefit Jason's children: Erika, Ashley and Brayden. The fund was set up by Sabra with Truliant Federal Credit Union, 3621 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615. Please make check donations payable to Sabra Bateman with Jason Bateman Memorial Fund in the memo line.
