Jason Richard Koch, a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and uncle, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Surprise, Arizona on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Born in West Branch, Michigan on September 5, 1984, Jason was the treasured son of Carla (Werth) and Jeffery Koch. He graduated from Ogemaw Heights High School in 2003 and later pursued his passion for creativity and connection by earning his professional cosmetology license from the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy. Life took him to many places, such as Orlando, Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta before he planted roots, bought a home, and built a circle of treasured friends in Surprise, Arizona.

Jason is survived by his mother and stepfather, Carla Koch and Gary Shintani of Manton, his father Jeff Koch of Midland, and his beloved grandmother, Carol Werth, He is also survived by his brothers Joshua (Alexsis) Koch of Midland and Jordan (Shelby Scarla) Koch of Kent City. Among the many roles Jason embraced, none brought him more pride than being “Uncle J” to Parker, Amelia, Jonah, and Adalynn. He was especially honored to serve as Godfather to Adalynn. He also leaves behind several aunts/uncles and cousins including Shannon (Michael Miller) Lorenz of Ada, Kyle (Rylee Welsh) Lorenz of Ada, Nanclynn Clark of Augres, Deanna (Rick) Davidson of Naples, Florida and Tracey (Kirk) Bielby of West Branch.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Richard Werth, and his paternal grandparents, Lyle and Phyllis Koch.

Those who knew Jason know that two people held a sacred place in his heart—his beloved mom and his cherished Grammy. Every client who sat in his chair learned quickly about his deep bond with both of them. His love and admiration for the strong women in his life were evident in every conversation.

Jason loved hard and felt deeply. He once quoted Bob Marley: “Some people feel the rain, others just get wet.” Jason felt every drop hit his soul. He carried a sensitive soul and often struggled with the injustices of the world. But he found comfort in the unconditional love of animals. His childhood home became an impromptu hobby farm full of pigs, goats, horses, and an endless stream of dogs. He once showed up in Michigan with baby chicks for Jonah and Adalynn-completely unannounced. He was the uncle who would do that silly stuff. He was a true rescuer, and his Arizona garage once served as a makeshift chicken nursery. He often threatened to turn his pool into a horse stable. Jason leaves behind his two soul dogs, Elizabeth Grace and Josephine, and his beloved horse, Robyn—named after a dear friend and client.

Jason had a gift for connection. A simple trip to the store with him would take longer than expected—he always ran into someone he knew. He had the ability to make others feel seen, valued, and heard. His smiles exuded genuine warmth and compassion. His hugs were legendary, and if you were lucky enough to receive one, you truly were lucky enough.

Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we take comfort in Jason’s unwavering faith. In a world where religion is often used to exclude individuals like him, Jason knew without a doubt that he was deeply loved and fully accepted by God. He now rests in a place of peace.

Jason’s love, light, and fierce loyalty will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at St John’s Lutheran Church in West Branch. Family will be there at 10:00 for those who want to pay their respects. Guests are invited to join us after for a luncheon.
