Jason William Lietz, loving husband, devoted father and dedicated son, 51 years of age, passed away from a brief illness on Monday, September 18, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Jason was born on November 8, 1971 to Dean and Linda (Hansel) Lietz. He grew up in Niles, Michigan and later moved to Buchanan, Michigan where he and his wife raised their family.
Left to cherish the memory of Jason is his loving wife of 28 years, Shelley Lietz; his daughters, Melena Hogan (John Hewer), Catherine Lietz, Claire Lietz, and Audrey Lietz; his parents, Dean and Linda Lietz; his brother, Scott (Melissa) Lietz; and his sister, Rachel Lietz.
Jason was passionate about traveling and being outdoors. He found peace in camping, hiking, and simply being in nature. As a self-proclaimed arborist, his memory will live on in the trees he planted, the knowledge he shared, and the lives he touched.
His love for music was infectious, often seen playing the guitar and singing, which brought an abundance of joy to those around him. He was the front man of his college band, Wok the Dog, and continued to write and record music over the years. Jason cultivated that same love of music in his daughters.
Jason had many other interests including Star Wars, trivia, science, board and video games, and cars. He took pride in planning annual family vacations to national parks, ski resorts, and historic sites around the country, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
As an avid sports enthusiast, Jason was a proud coach of his daughters' elementary and middle school basketball teams and always supported them in all of their athletic endeavors. He loved watching sports and rooting for his favorite team, Notre Dame.
Jason's dedication to his community was evident in his role as a member of the City of Buchanan Planning Commission. Through his career with NIPSCO and later NiSource, he led others in advocating for the environment, which was an integral part of his life.

Jason was my freshman year roommate at Union College and we immediately clicked. He was always such an open, kind and caring man. He was also an inspiration as the singer of our band Wok the Dog. I was honored to play an important role at his wedding with Shelley, and so excited that both of them were able to join my wedding many years later in Rome. Jason has had a huge and inspiring role in my life, teaching me to be kind to everyone and appreciate what we have. I will never take the memory of our friendship for granted!

Through our profession- Jason always brought out the best of the team at work. His passion for the environment (and trees!) was always evident and forefront. His attitude was infectious. He certainly was so special. He will absolutely be missed. My deepest condolences.
