Jay Odie Griffith, known affectionately as Jay to his friends and family, departed this world on October 3, 2024, following an accident. He was born on August 31, 1944, in Big Springs, Texas, to the late Joe and Dorothy Griffith and grew up in Texas with his sister Carol, who survives him. Jay passed away at the age of 80 in Round Rock, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and enduring spirit.
Jay's journey began in the heart of Texas, where he cultivated his love for the sciences. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors. Jay's professional life was marked by a commitment to environmental safety, having worked as a Waste Water Technician with Texas Instruments for many years, before working for Raytheon until his retirement. His contributions to the field were not only a testament to his intelligence but also to his desire to make the world a better place
Beyond his professional achievements, Jay was a man of many interests. His hands were rarely still, as he loved building things and taking on home projects that showcased his creativity and served as a testament to his ability to bring ideas to life. The soothing sounds of Native American flute music often accompanied him as he meticulously tended to his garden, another of his passions. Jay's culinary skills were equally admired, as he loved cooking and sharing his creations with those he cherished most.
Family was the centerpiece of Jay's life. He leaves behind a loving wife, Dora Griffith, with whom he shared countless memories and an unbreakable bond. His daughters, Jan and Suzy, will forever remember their father's kindness and the gentle wisdom he imparted. Jay also played a significant role in the lives of his step-children, Anthony, David, and Reita Dumas, who will miss his generous spirit. His grandchildren, Abrianna and Bear, and great-granddaughter Emmi, were the lights of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Jay's love extended to his four-legged companions as well. His dogs were more than pets; they were part of the family, sharing in the warmth and affection that Jay had in abundance.
Those who knew Jay would describe him as intelligent, kind, and generous. He had the rare ability to listen intently and speak thoughtfully, impacting lives in the most positive ways. Jay's absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege to know him, but his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the family he adored, and the natural world he helped preserve.
As we say goodbye to Jay Odie Griffith, we celebrate a life lived with honor and joy. His memory will continue to inspire us to approach each day with the same love and enthusiasm he had for life. Jay's journey on earth has concluded, but his story will be told for generations to come, as those who loved him recount tales of the remarkable man they were blessed to call husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
