HENDERSONVILLE – Jenning Stephen "Jay" Sonnon, 45, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Peru, IL, Jay grew up in the Chicago area and lived in Georgia and Florida before moving to Henderson County in 2007. He attended Illinois Valley Community College where he played baseball. He was the Assistant Manager for Hendersonville Pawn Shop, where he made numerous friends since he began working there in 2013. He was a hard worker, but a sociable person. He and his family attended Biltmore Church.
Jay was an avid baseball fan, and a diehard supporter of all the Chicago-based sports teams. He had collected baseball cards since childhood and could quote any baseball statistic from memory perfectly. He got to see the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY; however, his most memorable event was when he and his family got to meet the entire current Chicago Cubs roster through the support of the Dream Foundation.
Jay was the son of Stephen and Marie Strange Sonnon. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ed and Kimi Strange; uncles: Al Stone and Dave Sonnon, Sr.; and his beloved boxer bulldog, Vargas.
In addition to his parents, surviving are his wife of 15 years, Jennifer Johnson Sonnon; son, Cayden Wrigley Sonnon; sister, Shannan (Justin) Connelly; mother- and father-in-law, Curtis and Debbie Johnson; cousins: Bryon (Rachael) Stone, Kyle (Abby) Stone, Dave (Mandi) Sonnon, Dusten (Ridgeley) Sonnon, and Devon Sonnon; aunts: Donna Sonnon and Marge Stone; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 5:00 PM Thursday, March 7, 2024 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chuck Freeman and Rev. Donnie Brannen officiating.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 5:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
The family would like to send a special, heart-felt "Thank You" to The Dream Foundation for organizing the trip to meet the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Cubs for their hospitality during their visit, Jay's mother- and father-in-law, Curtis and Debbie Johnson, the Captain Gilmer Christian School, Jason Gibson, the Brandon Russell family, Nicholas Salas, Mike and Carolyn Prather, Dennis and Rick Sulo and family, and the Bo Rhew family for their love and support, and to Dr. Kim, Dr. Baseman, the nurses and staff of Grace Oncology for the care Jay received while he was a patient.
Shuler Funeral Home is honored to assist Jay's family with his arrangements.
