Jay Michael Tanner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and dear friend, passed away unexpectedly on March 27, 2026, in Union, Ohio. Born on June 14, 1976, in Dayton, Ohio, Jay’s vibrant spirit and loving nature touched all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and fierce devotion to family.
He attended Wayne High School, class of 1994, Jay was a man who carried his small-town roots with pride throughout his life. He built a fulfilling career as a skilled HVAC worker at WPAFB, demonstrating the same dedication and craftsmanship in his profession that he showed in his personal life. Beyond his work, Jay was known for his fun-loving personality, able to bring a smile to anyone’s face and light up a room with his infectious joy.
Jay’s passions were many, and they were shared with those he held closest. A fiercely competitive spirit, he loved nothing more than playing games—whether cards or cornhole—with family by his side. His genuine love for sports made him a dedicated OSU Buckeyes fan, and he thoroughly enjoyed the playful rivalry of beating his brother at golf. Yet, it was the simple moments, like spending time outdoors at family cookouts or sharing silly jokes with his granddaughter Arya Mae Hauptsteuck, that truly captured his heart.
He was a man of great warmth—loving, generous, and compassionate—and his love for his family was evident in everything he did. Jay’s wife, Jaime Collins, stood steadfast by his side through life’s joys and challenges. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family that included his daughter London Tanner, as well as his step-sons Austin Hauptsteuck (and his wife Merissa) and Cody Collins. Jay’s heart was also forever tethered to his granddaughter Arya Mae, with whom he shared countless moments of laughter and affection.
His mother, Sue Mauller, and siblings David (Shannon) Brewster and Kelli (Peter) Bailey, along with a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, carry forward the light he so freely gave. Though he has been preceded in death by his daughter Casey Tanner and brother Robert “Boo” Tanner, their memories remain cherished threads woven deeply into the fabric of Jay’s story.
Jay’s competitive yet caring nature defined him as much as his love for family. Whether out on the golf course, gathered around the table, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, he was always present—full of laughter, ready with a joke, and eager to share a good time.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Dayton, located at 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424.
