Jean Carter, 96, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, formally a lifelong resident of Fredericktown passed away on August 22, 2025 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home. She was born on January 8, 1929 to Darwin and Cecelia (Dowds) Braddock in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Jean was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in Fredericktown. She worked at Knox Community Bank as a teller prior to raising children and after the death of her husband, Jack.

She volunteered at Interchurch Social Services, Fredericktown Senior Activity Center and at Knox Community Hospital. Jean was well known in Fredericktown for being the cashier at the Fredericktown elementary school. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and gardening. She was a consummate homemaker and an avid Buckeyes fan.

Jean is survived by her children, Nancy Schell of Athens, Ohio; Tom (Sheila) Carter of Worthington, Ohio; Gary (Kim) Carter of Fredericktown; grandchildren Nick (Brittany) Schell of Athens, Ohio; Natalie (David) Deal of Granville, Ohio; Colin (Rachel) Carter of Hilliard, Ohio; Aaron (Madison) Carter of Fredericktown and Zach Carter of Fredericktown; great grandchildren Jack Deal, Frankie Deal and Elowen Schell; and many extended family members.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Jack E. Carter, her sister Eileen Ruhl and her parents, Darwin and Cecilia Braddock.

The family would like to acknowledge special thanks to Ohio Eastern Star staff for their loving care and support over these last few years, and to Capitol City Hospice for their expert care these last few months and weeks.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 27, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Cornerstone Community Church, 123 Columbus Rd, Fredericktown, OH 43019 with a Memorial Service to follow at noon.
