It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one, Jean Courtney, 77, of Harwood. After a long battle with cancer, Jean passed peacefully from this life to the next on Thursday evening, September 14, 2023. Jean was born to Bruce and Berdice Rood Jowers in Malvern, Arkansas. Although she was born in Arkansas, she was raised in Abilene, Texas and was the first of three siblings. She attended Abilene High School where her friend set her up on her one and only blind date. It was then she met Sammy Courtney. They married a little over a year later in August of 1963.
Jean had a deep love for her family. Her family was always her top priority. She was the backbone of the family and always instilled the importance of family and staying close. She loved to host or attend family get-togethers, cooking amazing food and playing games. She leaves behind a legacy of beautiful memories and a faithful family. She had a love of fishing and enjoyed every opportunity to wet a line in salt or fresh water. She had a green thumb and was passionate about keeping her lawn, flower beds, and especially her roses looking beautiful. There wasn't any plant or flower that wouldn't thrive under her care.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She adored her family and was an extremely loving and giving mother. As a cook there are few comparisons, and her Thanksgiving dinners remain legendary. Such mothers as Jean, who revel in family, nature, and faith are definitive examples of Proverbs 31:28 "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." To be sure, all Jean asked of her family was to be happy and most importantly, love one another.
Jean is survived by her loving husband, Sam Courtney of Harwood, her stepfather, Troy Buchanan of Odessa, and her sister Sharon Maxwell of Alba. She was the proud mother of 3 children: her daughters, Dawna Courtney Ramirez (Charles) and Jennifer Courtney (Robert) all of Kyle, and son, Larry Courtney (Amy) of Harwood. She was a loving grandmother to 7 grandchildren, Nicholas Courtney, Kristen Austin (Steven), Courtney Walker, Kaylee Turbeville (David), Kandyce Hall, Victoria Courtney, and Ethan Espinoza. She was an adoring great-grandmother to 16 great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her beloved and faithful dog, Tinkerbell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Wilma Delayne McDonald.
A Life Celebration service will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 3:00p.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of usual remembrances friends may make memorials contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
