FARRAND, JEAN MARIE. Age 76. It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jean Marie Farrand, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, lifelong educator, and fierce advocate for animals, who left this world on July 17, 2025, after a brave and relentless battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jean was the loving mother of Michael Farrand, Jill (Dale) Millns and Rebecca (Kirk) Lauterbach. She was the proud grandmother of Vivian, Jackson, Kasen, Caroline, Reid, Piper and Ellie. And dearest sister of Phyllis Davenport, Brian Torma, Kevin (Sherrii) Torma, Maureen Torma, John (Jane) Torma, & David Torma.
Jean spent more than 40 years shaping young minds as a dedicated teacher, serving 32 years with Utica Community Schools and 20+ years as an adjunct professor at Baker College, Davenport University and University of Phoenix. But her commitment to teaching didn't stop there, she continued serving in schools as a substitute teacher through October of 2024 in both the Utica and Romeo Community School districts. The classroom was a place where she could demonstrate patience, encouragement, and strength where every child felt seen and valued. Even through the pain and uncertainty of her illness, she clung to her love of teaching - always holding onto the hope that she would one day return to the work and the staff that gave her life so much meaning.
Outside of her home and classroom, Jean found deep purpose in rescuing and caring for animals - especially those dogs in need. Over the years she gave countless four-legged friends a second chance at life, offering them not just shelter, but warmth, devotion, and true companionship.
Her greatest joy came with the title of "Grandma". Her grandchildren were her world, and she never missed a moment cheering them on, even if she couldn't be there in person. Whether it was sporting events, school activities, birthday parties or that emergency phone call in the morning when they were not feeling well, she was their constant and comforting presence.
In her final days, Jean was surrounded by her loving daughters as they held her hand while she took her final breath - just as she always held theirs.
The family invites you to join them during a visitation Wednesday 3-8pm with 7:00pm Sharing of Memories at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Rd. (SHELBY TOWNSHIP).
