Jean Langan Obituary
Born in New York City and a longtime resident of the Washington area, died at Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring. She was 96. The cause was complications after hip surgery following a fall.
She wed her husband, Walter Langan, in 1951 in the Bronx, NY, and lived there until 1956 when they moved to Washington, later living in Woodbridge, Virginia, Alexandria, Virginia, Bowie, Maryland and back to Alexandria, before moving with her husband to Ocean Pines, Maryland following his retirement. After her husband's death in 2014 she moved to the Riderwood Retirement Village in Silver Spring, Maryland, her final residence.
She spent most of her childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area, attending Burlingame High School there, before returning with her family to New York at the outset of the Second World War. As a child she was an accomplished gymnast, earning a medal at the California State Fair.
During the final years of the war and for a few years thereafter, she worked as a switchboard operator for the New York Telephone Company.
After her children were grown, she returned to school and completed an AA degree at Northern Virginia Community College. While living in Ocean Pines, she volunteered as a policy advocate for the local chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and, along with her husband, published the organization's newsletter. She was also Vice President of the local chapter of the Democratic Party.
Survivors include her three children, Alice Anderson (Larry Anderson dcc) of Crofton, Maryland, Walter Langan of Springfield, Virginia, and Ken Langan of Los Angeles, five grandchildren: April Anderson, Matt Anderson, Amy Chapman (Kevin), Erik Anderson and Julia Langan, along with two great granddaughters: Sadie Anderson and Lilah Chapman.
A funeral mass will be held at the Riderwood Chapel, 3140 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, Md. 20904, on May 30 at 11:00 am, followed by interment with her husband at Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland.
