Jean Young Wolfrey, 89, of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025. Born in Petersburg, VA on February 12, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Everette Earl Caffrey and Inez Humphries Caffrey. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene Preston Wolfrey, I. and many of her siblings.
She is survived by her sons, Gene P. Wolfrey, II., Paul E. Wolfrey (Robin A. Slade), and Nathan Wolfrey (Cheryl Unger), and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Jean was a loving wife and mother who spent many years caring for her family at home and also served her church faithfully by working in the library and helping prepare countless Sunday school lessons. Following her dreams, she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse certification at the age of 49 and devoted the next 30 years to caring for others, working at Westminster Canterbury Assisted Living in Richmond and later at Hiram W. Davis Medical Center through Central State Hospital in Petersburg. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attending congregations in Colonial Heights and Petersburg, and found deep comfort in her faith, tithing, and daily scripture reading. Jean was also an avid gardener, always tending to her vegetables and proudly canning or pickling her harvests. In her spare time, she expressed her creativity through music- singing and playing many instruments, as well as crocheting and knitting.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA.
