Jeannette Check Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garrity Funeral Home on Mar. 29, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeannette A. Check, age 89, of Prairie du Chien, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who entered eternal rest on March 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Jeannette was born on May 4, 1936, to Ada Sherrick. She was united in marriage to Robert A. Checkon May 12, 1954, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, Wisconsin. Together, they raised their family on the farm in rural Prairie du Chien, where they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and family.

Jeannette found her greatest joy in the simple beauty of home and family. An avid gardener, she spent countless hours tending to her flower gardens alongside her beloved dog, Bailey, creating a peaceful sanctuary for all to enjoy.

Her kitchen was truly the heart of her home. A talented baker, Jeannette especially looked forward to the holidays as a time to try new recipes and prepare family favorites, including her well-loved poppy seed cake. Her most cherished tradition was the home-cooked Sunday family meal, filled with conversation, laughter, and togetherness.

Nothing lit up Jeannette's face quite like the arrival of her family. She was their biggest cheerleader and most enthusiastic listener, always eager to hear about their lives and celebrate every milestone.

Jeannette was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert A. Check, on July 31, 2022, following 68 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Ada Sherrick; her sister, Barbara Yeoman; and her brother-in-law, Robert Keppler.

She is survived by her children: Rodney (Marlene) Check, Sharon (Dennis) Paulus, Greg Check, and Laurie (Carl) Wall; her sister, Diane Keppler; her grandchildren: Jeryl (Chris) Clark, Daniel (Heather) Paulus, Audrie (Shawn) Schlee, Pamela (Greg) Bedward, Heather Wall, Andrew Wall, Paul Check, Carl (Nola) Check, and Justin (Liz) Check; and her great-grandchildren: Avery and Emerson Clark, Gage, Kase, and Emery Paulus, Emmett and Lincoln Schlee, and Carter and Aurora Check. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, Wisconsin, with Fr. Chinnappan Pelavendran and Fr. Thomass Huffconcelebrating. Burials will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.

Jeannette's warmth, nurturing spirit, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
