Jeffrey Weikert Obituary

Jeffrey Weikert, 72, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, at the Columbus Hospice Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 22, 1953, to Bob and Eleanor Weikert. As a self-described tinkerer, his childhood was marked by ambitious engineering projects, much to his mother's dismay, such as disassembling their washing machine with designs to turn it into a go-cart. He could also be found with his group of friends, The Wombats, playing softball or running riotously through their neighborhood.

Jeff met the love of his life, Maureen Houle, in high school and they were wed in 1978. They were happily married for 46 years.

Jeff's professional journey was a testament to his grit and intellect. After working for a decade as an auto mechanic, he returned to school to earn his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, graduating in 1985. Following several years at Mack Truck, Jeff joined Cummins Inc. in 1990, moving with his family to Columbus.

He enjoyed a distinguished career at Cummins lasting 25 years. Starting as a test engineer in the combustion, performance, and emissions development test cells, he quickly moved into a leadership role in 1993/4 as the Mechanical Development Leader, and advanced again in 1997 to the Chief Engineer of the global B series engine. From 2000-02, he served as Team Project Leader for the European Engine Alliance, in England. From there, he became the program leader in 2004 for the 2007 MidRange products. In 2008 he was promoted to Vice President of MidRange Engineering. Subsequently, in 2012, Jeff moved to the Components Business Unit as Chief Technical Officer. He additionally served on several Cummins Joint Venture boards internationally. He retired from Cummins in 2015. Over his career, he was lucky enough to travel the world and form lasting friendships everywhere he went.

In retirement, Jeff found peace in his sanctuary-a custom garage where he rebuilt cars, including an Austin Healy Sprite for his wife Maureeen, The Muppet Bus, and his Saab Sonnet, among many others. He was a man who could fix anything, a skill only surpassed by his ability to throw a party.

He gave back to his community through his involvement with the Bartholomew County Historical Society.

Jeff was a devoted family man and is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen; his children, Tom and his wife Munmun and granddaughter Omera; Charlie and his wife Christina; and his sisters Kathy Weikert and Deb Noon.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. ~ 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington St.

Jeffrey will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, Indiana.

Arrangements by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.

Jeff was one of the most caring and capable bosses anybody could work with. His visions were way ahead of his time. We developed a program to take the 3D CAD models and assembled the complete product in 10-15 seconds. To Jeff, his next version, was to create a dynamic model of that completed product. Always thinking forward. A true visionary teaching the people he was with to always go past the next step.

Passing along my condolences to the Weikert family. While I didn´t know Jeff well, I worked with Tom for a bit at Cummins and enjoyed our friendship during that time. I´m sorry for your loss.

Jeff was my first boss when I moved from Cummins Fuel Systems to Midrange Engineering in 2025. What a joy was to work for him! Jeff gave me all the support that I needed. He was available!
Our early morning coffee time usually was our one on one meeting. As time went by, our friendship took over the boss-employee relationship. Jeff was one of my sponsors for my China Engineering assignment. His insight of oversea work experiences helped my career development. Jeff will be missed as my boss, mentor, and friend! Qiqing

I really enjoyed working for Jeff. He always had time when needed, very perceptive to understand what was going on, and a great engineer. He was a great person as well, fun, caring, and great to be around.

An amazing man to work with and enjoy life with. He was kind, brilliant, always helpful, and a great mentor.

I knew Jeff from the early 1990s after we first met in the old SEDC in Columbus. We later became close colleagues when we both worked together in the EEA office in the UK in the early 2000s. A more friendly, open, and welcoming colleague could not be wished-for; and an intuitive and natural engineer for sure and always a 'solutions' guy, never a 'problems' guy.
I am devastated that he is gone and way too soon. My sincere condolences to Maureen and the family.

Jeff was one of those rare souls who quietly shaped lives in ways that last forever.

At a time when I was still finding my way, he believed in me-long before I had the confidence or credentials to believe in myself. His trust and mentorship became the foundation of my career and the person I grew into.

What made Jeff extraordinary was that his care extended far beyond work. He welcomed me into his personal life, stood beside me in my most important moments, and traveled across the world-from Columbus to Kolkata-just to be present at my wedding. Those gestures spoke of a generosity and warmth that words cannot fully capture.

From a mentor to a colleague, and eventually to a dear friend-Jeff´s presence in my life was a blessing I will always carry with gratitude. His kindness, faith in people, and quiet strength will live on through the many lives he touched.

i was lucky enough to see all his cars pictures he made, after his retirement. Sharing some memories,

Jeff was an "Engineer's engineer", and there were very few problems he couldn't solve!
We had many adventures around the world, from pre-natal classes in Columbus, dismantaling, (and rebuilding); lawn tractors in Vegas; to serving customers in Europe, China and India!
One hell of a ride, Jeff always brought an air of scepticism and of course the solution!
We will miss you buddy!
Love to Maureen and the boys,

Jeff was an awesome engineer and a great person. One thing I really appreciated about Jeff was he always came with a solution. It was always a creative (maybe crazy?) idea and he would share it to get feedback. He didn´t bring problems. He came with solutions.

Jeff was one of the best bosses I ever had in my 35 years at Cummins. He cared for each one of us and quietly helped support me in my career journey before it was a `thing´ to help out female engineers in a very male dominated arena. I learned so much from him and owe so much of my career journey to him. He navigated through the politics. He not only was an extremely bright and capable hands-on engineer he was one of the best leaders. He let me be me and grow and develop from a spunky young engineer to a leader in engineering. Best mentor I ever had. Wonderful person who was always honest, always straight with you.
In his retirement I was fortunate to be able see him once in awhile. I once ran into him at the airport as he & Maureen were anxiously awaiting their baby granddaughter to arrive for Christmas. You could see in his face how much he loved his family and could not WAIT for that plane to land
Jeff was one heck of a guy and will be missed by many, sadly leaving this earth too soon. I´m thankful to have been influenced by him. Rest in Peace, Jeff and I hope he´s not bothering too many angels in heaven asking where the torque wrenches are kept.

I remember one time when I was in his office talking through some testing, then we got to telling jokes and Angie had to come over and shut his door because we were laughing so hard! What a Great guy!!

Jeff was my first boss in `94. He was so much fun to work with. Every morning he´d share jokes he has amassed over the years. So many great stories snd adventures. I commonly re-tell to young engineers the time when he was yanked from a test cell at Mack by the shirt collar just as an adjacent test cells engine crashed thru the wall....and the other story where he was a BMW tech and a little old lady came in saying the engine had a miss. Impressed with her diagnosis he took it in a test drive. He couldnt see the problem so he asked the customer and her response was "It´s right there between 120 and 125mph". Jeff´s response "I´ll change the plugs and wires right away , ma´am". He ate PB&J every day for lunch and so did I. Jeff will be greatly missed for all he did for Cummins and young Cummins engineers careers.
