Jerald P. Gleason, 87, of East Peoria, passed away at his home, surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
Jerry was born October 3, 1938 in Peoria to the late Peter and Stella Burchett Gleason. He married Margaret (Turl) Brewer on February 3, 1994 in Santa Fe, NM.
Surviving is his wife, Margaret; his children, Peter, Lea Ann, Anissa, and Karen; his step-children, Shannon, Casey, Penny, and Leon; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and his dog Stella.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Gina and two dogs, Missy and Tina.
Jerry graduated from Woodruff High School in 1957 and immediately enlisted in the United States Army. He enjoyed a long and prestigious career as a Green Beret, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. His service was highly decorated, earning one Silver Star, four Bronze Stars, three of which were for valor, three Purple Hearts, two Meritorious Service medals, and one Air Medal. He was also awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and with Bronze Star, among others for his service, which was extensive, including his service with the Royal Thai Army, parachuting into Nicaragua, and assignments in Panama and Germany to name a few.
Jerry was an inspiration and a mentor to many, beginning with his ROTC instruction at Georgetown University to his mentorship at the US Space and Rocket Center, where he is a Hall of Fame member.In addition to all these achievements, he completed 6 Ironman Triathalons in Hawaii.
He was a man of deep faith and commitment. He cherished his Sioux heritage and the ability to keep those traditions alive.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
In lieu or flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of his favorite charities, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.
