Michael "Mike" McClellan, 64, of Washington died at home on October 19 after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.
Born in Independence, Missouri to Richard and Mary McClellan, the family moved to Petersburg, Illinois when Mike was 12. He graduated from Petersburg Porta High School where he played golf and participated in FFA among other activities. He went on play golf at Lincoln Land Community College before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Northern Illinois University in 1983.
Mike had a broadcasting career as chief meteorologist at KTTC-TV in Rochester, MN, WICS-TV in Springfield, IL, WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, NC and at WMBD-TV in Peoria. In 1995, he earned the award for Best Weathercast in the state of Illinois from the Illinois Broadcasters Association. Mike held the American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval and was the 2001 National Chairman of the Board of Broadcast Meteorology of the American Meteorological Society.
In 1993 Mike combined his passion for weather and golf by founding Mobile Weather Team, Inc., which specializes in on-site weather forecasting, advance storm warning, lightning predication and detection for the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Men's European PGA Tour (DP World Tour), Ladies European Tour, Asian Tour, China Tour, PGA Championship, the Masters and the Ryder Cup. Since 2008, Mobile Weather Team has focused solely on international clients.
Under Mike's leadership, Mobile Weather Team developed the weather warning system that's still in use on the PGA Tour, the Masters and other golf events. Mobile Weather Team also provides on-site weather services for state fairs, including the Oklahoma State Fair.
Mike met his wife, Shelli (Dankoff), during their time at KTTC-TV. They were married 39 years and were parents of three sons: Scott (Veronica, and twin daughters Leila and Allison of Plainfield, IL) Matthew (Denver, CO), and Nicholas (Monica, of Washington), all of whom survive.
Mike is also survived by his brother, Patrick (Becky) McClellan, niece Molly, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
When he wasn't working golf events around the world, Mike enjoyed playing a round as often as possible. He liked throwing back Budweisers with the guys at taco Tuesday or wing-ding Wednesday, hunting and fishing. The north of the border fishing crew knew Jethro was always down for a good breakfast!
Mike enjoyed coaching his sons' biddy basketball and JFL teams when they were young, and as a life-long Kansas City Chiefs fan he finally got to see them win some Super Bowls.
Visitation will be at Deiters Funeral Home and crematory in Washington on Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
While Mike's legacy in weather safety is well-known, may his lasting impact also inspire you to be proactive with your health. Get the test and don't ignore the results. Early detection offers far more options for treatment and recovery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute through the OSF Foundation in honor of Dr. James McGee's work in radiation-oncology and theranostics.
The family wishes to thank those who provided care on the neuro acute care floor at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, and the OSF Home Care Palliative Care and OSF Hospice teams.
