Jerald Harper Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harris Funeral Home, Inc. on Mar. 18, 2026.
Jerald "Jerry" Ray Harper, 82, of Slaughters, Ky., passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, surrounded by family at Redbanks Colonial Terrace Nursing Home in Sebree, KY.

He was born on November 19, 1943, in Hopkinsville, KY, to the late Wilma Fuller Harper.

He lived a life marked by steady work, family devotion, and long faithfulness to the church. His days reflected a deep connection to the people and places he loved, and his memory will remain a blessing to those who knew him.

Jerry spent his career as a carpenter, homebuilder, and dog breeder, working with his hands and caring for the things entrusted to him. He was also known for the interests that brought him joy, including singing, photography, breeding dogs, and horses. For more than sixty years, he was a member of Lone Star Church, a lasting part of his life and witness. Through the years, his presence, dedication, and faithful spirit left an enduring mark on his family and all who shared life with him.

In addition to his mother, Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Poteet; niece, Teresa Poteet; and nephew, Mike Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Sarah Dutton Harper; sister, Janet "Jan" (William "Dickie") Mitchell; daughter, Tina Harper and Jim Nalley, and their children, Jereomy Harper, Kaylyn and Zelene Zaleta, Anthony and Tasha Nalley, and great-grandchildren Finley, Avarie, Kayleigh, and Jordan Demuth, and great-grandchild Delaney; and his daughter, Amy and Rob Doner, and their children, Nathaniel Doner and Kylee Brady, great-grandchild, Hudson and Matthew Doner, and Ellie Moore. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry his memory forward with love.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Shelly Hendricks officiating. Burial will be held at Grapevine Cemetery in Madisonville.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour on Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Doner, Nathaniel Doner, Rob Doner, Scott Mitchell, Chad Ladd, and Phillip Hancock. Honorary pallbearers are Dickie Mitchell, David Adams, Jr. Sizemore, and John Hancock.

Though Jerry's earthly journey has ended, the love he shared and the faith he honored remain in the hearts of those who grieve and give thanks for his life.
