**Obituary for Jerald Alan Sorrell** **October 2, 1970 – September 23, 2025** Jerald Alan Sorrell, affectionately known as Jay, was born on October 2, 1970, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Linda Sorrell and the late Jerome Jones. He peacefully transitioned from this life, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. Jay was educated at St. Stephen Catholic School and graduated from Brashear High School in 1988. He went on to attend Wilberforce University before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Central State University in 1993. A gifted professional, Jay built a successful career as a Voice Engineer. He began his career at Nextel and continued his journey at Motorola in Chicago, Illinois, before ultimately relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, to work for Cox Communications. In 2003, Jay married the love of his life, Tapika Wright. Together, they built a beautiful family and raised two children, Ja-Mal and Jaida, who were his greatest pride and joy. Jay's passions extended far beyond his family and career. A firm believer in developing youth through sports, he devoted his time to coaching basketball at Rock Chapel Park and with the Atlanta Kings, shaping young athletes both on and off the court. He was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan, an avid basketball enthusiast, and found peace in fishing whenever he could find the time. Jay also gave freely of his time through volunteer work, including feeding the homeless and supporting many charitable causes. He was a proud Master Mason with Prince Hall Lodge Centralforce #124, cherishing the bonds of brotherhood and community. Jay leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Tapika; his beloved children, Ja-Mal and Jaida; his loving mother, Linda Sorrell; aunts Mary Scales (Robert) and Rita Sorrell; mother-in-law, Myrtle Wright; brothers-in-law Sylvester Tillman Jr. and Charles Lowe; sisters-in-law Rosa Lee Lowe, Trina Johnson-Tillman, and Abbie Tillman-Rumph. Cousins Roosevelt Tolliver (Debbie), Brian Robinson, and Hastina Robinson. And a host of nieces and nephews. He will also be fondly remembered by his extended family, fellow Masons, former coaches and players, and the countless lives he touched. Jay's life was one of love, dedication, and service. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
