Obituary published on Legacy.com by Girrbach Funeral Home, Inc. - Hastings on May 10, 2025.
Jerome "Jerry" Bernard, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on May 9, 2025, at the age of 92 and will be dearly missed by his loving family.
Born on February 16, 1933, in Dayton, OH, Jerry lived a life marked by faith, kindness, and dedication to his family, as evidenced by his 71 years of marriage to his devoted wife, Eleanor "Ellie" Bernard. They were married at St. Rose Catholic church on September 12, 1953 and together built a life filled with lasting memories. Jerry graduated from Hastings High School in 1951, and then spent two years serving in the Army. After his time in the service, Jerry was a builder for Walker Homes, a machinist at Clark Equipment then went on to work with the Feldpausch Corporation until his retirement.
Jerry lived a rich and joyful life. A master of wood carving and crafting, he brought beauty and warmth to every piece he created, including their home of over 41 years. He had a deep and abiding faith, playing a key role in the founding of Our Lady of Great Oak Catholic Church and serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus. For many years, he and his wife spent time square dancing with the Ringo Swingo Square Dance Club. Jerry also loved spending time outdoors, often on the golf course or camping with his friends and family. In their later years, Jerry and Ellie also enjoyed many great moments together during their winters in Florida. Beneath his playful humor lay a tender heart and a sharp mind. Around the card table, his calm demeanor and quiet confidence showed -yet he seemed to win every game, much to the amusement and admiration of everyone around him. Jerry's sweet smile could light up a room and make anyone feel loved.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Ellie, and their children Dennis Bernard, Dave (Lorri) Bernard, Karen Bernard and Julie (Jeff) Dobbin; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; sister Eileen Meyers; brother-in-law, Robert Bonhomme; as well as numerous other relatives and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Raymond Bernard; sister, Norma Bonhomme; brother-in-law, Quentin Meyers; son, Daniel Bernard; and granddaughter Christina Bernard.
A visitation, including the sharing of memories, will be held at Girrbach Funeral Home on Friday, May 16, 2025 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, with reciting of the rosary at 7:30pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11am with a luncheon following the service.
