Jerome (Jerry) Thomas Trabbic, 92 of Fremont, passed away peacefully late Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, in the home and care of his daughter Janis.
Jerry was born in Toledo to Joseph L. Trabbic and Veronica A. (Ettl) Trabbic Imes. He grew up east of Oak Harbor on Joseph Imes's farm. Jerry, along with his sisters, worked the farm and attended Oak Harbor High School. There, he excelled as a speedy tailback for the Rockets and went on to compete in Columbus State Track & Field, where he was thrilled to meet his hero, Jessie Owens. Upon graduation in 1952 he was inducted into the US Army Feb 1953 and was assigned to the 578th Engineer Combat Battalion, serving in Korea with minesweeping as a primary duty until honorable discharge Dec.1954.
Jerry married Audrey C. Gabel on May 25, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Fremont. He worked various jobs at Whirlpool for nearly 40 attendance-perfect years, raised his family on the East Side, and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion 608, and the VFW Post 2947. Jerry bowled, played softball, and umpired. He loved laughing and playing practical jokes, sports, and pinochle with his children, passing on his passion for athletics and competitiveness. After retiring in 1991 he continued to stay active playing golf, gardening, and taking long walks to the VFW for a drink, a card game, laughter, and gambling trips to Greek Town. He was an avid sports fan of the Cleveland Browns, Indians – but loved Notre Dame above it all!
Jerry is survived by his wife, Audrey, of 67 years. His children, Janis (Randy) Zimmerman, Fremont, Mary (Rick) Heeren, Blacklick, Carla Trabbic, Brian Trabbic, and Michael Trabbic, all of Fremont; grandchildren, Cassandra (Christopher) Waigand, Abby Burrell; great-granddaughter, Vaughn Waigand; and sisters, Joan Reinbolt, Oregon, and Judy Imes Hughes, Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thomas Trabbic; and sister, Joyce Weithman.
A private Mass of celebration will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fremont.
Memorials can be made in Jerome's honor to Fremont VFW, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Wounded Warriors.
