None of us will live forever. He knew that and he knew that having family and being kind to those around you was the ticket to the future and not being forgotten. This is Senior Chief McClintock (age 83) I just had and held and kissed my first Great Granddaughter. FAMILY IS WHER ITS AT. He and I both knew and know this. FAIR WINDS SKIPPER.

My, how I miss that guy - served with him in USS VOGE and USS RICHARD L. PAGE and spent a day with him onboard USS WISCONSIN in 1990 in the Persian Gulf. Always a man of deep faith, courtesy, professional expertise and sterling integrity. Such an inspiring model of decency, humor and high standards. His gifts of faith and character gave us all so much.

I have just learned of Captain Blesch's passing. He changed my life. What a guy, what a man. I was 19 years old in 1977 when we left Norfolk for a nine-month cruise to the MED and North Atlantic. The very first ship I was assigned to in Norfolk Virginia was the USS R.L. Page. He has always been to me the best leader; the man young military guys could hope for. So many memories in such a short time. On Christmas 1977 while at sea he spent the entire day in the newest shipmates' clothes and did his job while the young seaman got to be Captain for the day. Who does that? I loved this guy. Farewell and following seas sir... Joseph J. Crockett. MSSN

I met Beta Brother Blesch at my 2nd or 3rd Beta Convention in Tarpon Springs. He was a very good man and asked me about the ASection Bsection thing at GMI. Over the years our paths would cross at another 16 to 18 conventions, leadership gatherings or other beta functions. He helped implement the men of principle and he lived those principles his entire life. His life of service with his military career stood out to most. I had several veterans for professors at GmI. A few we even called Captain, but Jerry to me was always Brother Blesch.
Rest in peace.

I served on USS WISCONSIN BB-64 with the Captain. He promoted me to Sergeant in February 1989. The Ships official photo of that promotion hangs next to my Marine Corps Warrant. Proud moment for me. I never ever saw the Captain yell or be loud with any crew member, instead, he was always teaching and encouraging his sailors and Marines. He knew all of us by name an incredible feat as Marines did not wear name tapes back then. Of all the Navy and Marine Officers I served with in my 23 years, Captain Blesch is in the top 2...capped only by General Al Gray.
Fair Winds and Following Seas, Captain.

From Tom Barnett, Capt. USN (Ret.)
Jerry Blesch was an extraordinary Commanding Officer - I was his
first Executive Officer in USS Richard L. Page FFG-5. Jerry took
command of a good ship and made her great - the best ship in the
Atlantic Fleet!
Jerry was a real people person, a natural leader of
young men, turning a diverse group of junior officers and sailors into
a cohesive team and USS Page into a super star warship.
I applied the leadership and management skills that I learned from Captain Blesch
to make my ships and sailors great too.
Thank you, Jerry. You are truly missed.
Tom Barnett, Capt. USN (Ret.)
XO USS Richard L. Page FFG-5, 1976-1977.

And I add,
Dear Karen, and Blesch family members,
I post the below condolences from Italian Navy Vice Admiral (Retired), Mario Rino Me.
Then LT Mario Me was our Italian Navy Exchange Officer in USS Richard L.
Page FFG-5 when Jerry was Commanding Officer - Jerry made him a
most welcome and integral member of the Page team during his tour
onboard. Mario, email address below, in reply to my email letting him

board Frigate R.L. Page, ranked as Navy's Finest, sends all of you his

I reported aboard USS Richard L. Page in June 1978, and was privileged to serve for several years under then Commander Blesch. He was one of the four or five commanding officers I served at sea with in my career who showed by his command style that he absolutely knew why he was there, to be ready to fight the ship. Personally, I will always be grateful for the assistance he gave me in my application for the Chief Warrant Officer program, and I attribute my success in that application in part to the help he gave me. I paid a call on him in August of 1982 while he was in command of USS Puget Sound, and he was excited for me, and continued to encourage me in my career. After my retirement I read that he was PCO Wisconsin, and I wrote to him, and he wrote to congratulate me on my successful career and retirement, and sent me a ticket for the Wisconsin's commissioning, but he said that we likely would not meet there, as he would be surrounded by Admirals and politicians. Nonetheless, it was an amazing day. I have great memories of Jerry Blesch.

Jerry was my commanding officer on my first ship duty assignment out of the Naval Academy in the late 1970s. USS Richard L. Page (FFG-5) was a great ship under then Commander Blesch, as noted in obit, recognized as best in Atlantic Fleet. I learned a lot about being a naval officer under Jerry, his XO and division officers, while serving as an engineering division officer, and later Navigator ('junior dept head'). That training and experience served me well in future assignments of a 20 year uniformed career, and subsequent Navy civil service ship design and R&D 2nd career. Deployments (long & hard on families) made fun, interesting & professionally educational.

Captain Blesch gave me the opportunity to serve as A Division on Wisconsin and challenged me to repair that darn Whistle. I hated telling him bad news like his evaporator scrubbers had to be replaced. Ultimately he moved me to Boiler Repair Officer. I respected him and admired him. He was the real deal and proud to have served with him.

I just learned of Capt. Blesch's passing. I served with him on the USS Wisconsin BB64 from 1988 until his departure. He was a great captain to serve under and my favorite memory of him was the day that I was reporting to the ship in Pascagoula MS, I was walking through the parking lot with my seabag and extra gear. It was a long walk to the ship and Capt. Blesch pulled up beside me in his Chevy Nomad and gave me a ride to the pier. He was a good man and I offer my condolences and prayers to his family. Fair winds and following seas Capt. Blesch!

One afternoon when we were underway, Captain Blesch came down to the officer wardroom, announced he was having rabbit for dinner, and asked who wanted to join him for dinner. I, along with a couple other officers, joined him for a delicious rabbit dinner that evening. One of my many fond memories.

My first ship Commanding Officer as I reported onboard the USS Puget Sound (AD38/COMSIXTHFLEET) in December 1981. I was just reporting from Radioman A School assigned into the CR Division. Captain B. would come up into the Comm Center each night and talk with the watch section and get his copy of the daily news report. He was so down to earth, he always remembered a name and face. He flocked me to RM3 and RM2 onboard the Sound.
Fast forward, when the Battleship Wisconsin was recommissioned, I was assigned on Recruiting Duty over in Mobile, Alabama. I brought over 20 future Sailors to ride the ship from Pascagoula, Mississippi over to Mobile to be the Mobile Mardi Gras ship. While touring the ship just prior to getting underway, the Captain was making his way about the ship, stopped and looked in my face and said, " we served together before on the Sound". I was amazed of his memory. Oh, what a great man, Captain, Naval Officer, and human being! RIP Skipper, I'll never forget my days of service under your leadership, and your support of the ship sporting teams. You set the positive example for so many of us to follow. Such a great leader!

As a Public Affairs Officer USNR it was my distinct privilege and honor to serve on Active Duty for Training on BB-64 when Captain Blesch was CO.
During her recommissioning in "goula", her Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) at the PNSY and subsequent deployment to the Persian Gulf during the early stages of Operation Desert Shield, I was assigned to battleship Wisconsin's PAO staff. Captain Blesch was the consummate Naval Officer, and a true professional in every way.
One of my treasured memories was being called to the 0-4 bridge while BB-64 was in the middle of an UNREP/VERTREP in the Mediterranean, and getting frocked to CDR by Captain Blesch.
Rest in Peace, Captain Blesch, and thank you for all you did to make our Navy great.

Jerry was Executive Officer on my first ship, USS VOGE DE-1047 and was a motivator and friend - he insisted on the highest standards in everything we did in that ship. In Department Head School I saw his face through the peep hole of the classroom door - he crooked his finger at me so I had to get up and see what was going on. He said: "You're coming to my ship - Weps or Ops?" I told him Weps and he then said, "OK, find me a good Ops officer from your class." I did and Round Two of my naval education began. It was beyond splendid: three deployments and an overhaul in almost three years - and we won the Battenberg Cup as best in the fleet. I was proud to host him on my ship just after he relinquished command of USS WISCONSIN in '90 in Bahrain. We stayed in touch until the end. My wife and I loved that man and dear Karen - the perfect Navy family. Kevin Green VADM, USN (Ret.)

I served under Capt Blesch, as a secondary battery radar technician. Capt Blesch was a well respected leader, that required his crew to adapt battleship standards with no leway. One of my memories of him was our first uniform inspection. He evaluated our personnel and promptly, gave his assessment of our Division, and I quote, "I thought you were Firecontrolmen, this is not the standard I expect of this Division" end quote, from there I assume he returned to his cabin. We had a second inspection a week later. God rest his sole! Capt we have the watch! Fair winds and following season.

My name is Mike Zitzer,
The first time I met Captain Blesch, I was a seamen just reporting aboard the USS Wisconsin.
I got in a lot of trouble when I was first in the Navy and Captain Blesch saw something in me, to this day I don´t know what,
about three years ago, I finally spoke to Captain Blesch after 30 years, he told me to call him Jerry, I just couldn´t do it, he was Captain Blesch to me, to all of us. he said he never kicked me out because he saw potential in me. That´s how smart he was. I told him how my life had changed, and he said he was proud of me. To hear those words out of your captain is the same as your own father saying them.
I saw him six times at Captains mast, he never kicked me out of the Navy, and he could´ve, but he didn´t, the last time was when he sent me to the brig in Guantánamo Bay Cuba, that´s when I finally woke up. I ended up doing 14 years in the Navy, and I thank him every day for changing my life for the better. I will dearly miss him.
Fairwinds and following seas Captain.

I had the honor of serving in the US Navy while Jerry Blesch was Captain of the USS Puget Sound (AD-38). He was an awesome captain. I remember back when we were returning home to port in Gaeta, Italy. We had run into a storm and really rough sea´s. I was called to man the helm. I´ll never forget that storm or how he remained so calm, cool and collected as we made our way through those huge waves.
Thank you for service and leadership,
