Jerry Lee Byess, a decorated U.S. Army veteran and beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at his residence on June 26, 2025 at the age of 78. Born on March 31, 1947, Jerry's life was marked by his steadfast commitment to service, his love for the outdoors, and his generous spirit.
He served his country in the U.S. Army. His bravery in the line of duty earned him the esteemed Silver Star and Purple Heart awards that reflected his courage and dedication. Jerry had a long career with the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring as a supervisor.
Jerry was a passionate outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. His green thumb was evident in the beautiful flowers and trees he planted and he could often be found operating his Uni-loader.
Jerry was a simple, kind, and generous man. He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. Above all, Jerry loved his family, his devotion to them was unwavering, and he will be fondly remembered as a pillar of strength, love, and support.
He was preceded in death by his parents. J.L. and Cleo Byess.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Byess; children, Michelle Holcomb (Wyatt), Michael Byess (Amy) and Josh Byess; eight grandchildren, Emma Holcomb, Elise Holcomb, Levi Byess, Ellie Holcomb, Blake Byess, Rance Dampier, Isabella Byess and Anna Byess; siblings, Steve Byess (Betty), Danny Byess (Shirley), David Byess (Beth) and Janice McClure (Bobby); as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Roger McClure and Rev. Shane Poole officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour.
