Jerry Lee Faris, Sr., age 78, of
Hanover, Indiana, and the son of the late Elmer Jacob and Dorothy Helen (Uebel) Faris, was born on October 20, 1947, in
Scottsburg, Indiana. He was a 1966 graduate of Southwestern High School in Hanover. Jerry was inducted into the United States Army and faithfully served his country during the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged on October 29, 1968. For over twenty years, he was a correctional officer at the Madison Correctional Facility until his retirement in March 2012. On October 20, 2013, he was united in marriage to Henrietta (Pennington) Taylor Hatchel Patton Faris in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and they enjoyed over twelve years together. In his spare time, he loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, going to auctions and yard sales, watching old westerns on television, traveling, hunting, fishing, and collecting baseball cards. He was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and loved listening to the Grand Ole Opry and gospel music. Mr. Faris passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the Norton King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, with his wife and family by his side.
He will be missed by his wife, Henrietta of Hanover; his children: Julia Sampson (Josh) of Madison and Chris Faris (Kristen Bray) of Lexington, Indiana; his daughter-in-law: Janet Faris of Springfield, Kentucky; his step-children: Brandon Taylor (Sheri) of Big Fork, Montana, Bryan Taylor (Tiffany) of North Vernon, Indiana, and Jessica Miller (Brad Reed) of Madison; his grandchildren: Katherine (Derek), Hannah (Elijah), Jaden, Mark, Kayla, Braeton, Hannah, Jia, Bryson, Owen, Emma, Natalie, Hunter, and Livy Grace; his great grandchildren: Conner, Weston, and Charlotte; his sister: Carol Wettstein; his brothers-in-law: Raymond Pennington (Lisa) of Canaan, Indiana, Kenny Pennington (Rhonda) of Canaan, and Lynn Pennington (Michelle) of Lexington; his sisters-in-law: Pauline Faris of Greensburg, Sharon Wooline (Ed) of Kingsman, Indiana, Barb Sims (Rob) of Hanover, and Carolyn Salkeld of Lexington; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Lee Faris, Jr., died August 7, 2025; his daughter: Kimberly McAttee, died July 9, 2024; his brothers: Bill Faris, died February 27, 2013 and Charles "Chuck" Faris, died March 10, 2013; his sister: Marge Oliver, died October 27, 2011; his son-in-law: Mark McAttee, died February 26, 2025; his father-in-law: Lindburgh Couch, died July 2, 2018; his mother-in-law: Shirley Couch, died November 3, 2020.; his brother-in-law: Ken Salkeld, died July 13, 2024; and his great niece: Savannah Scott, died December 7, 2015.
His nephew, Jack Oliver will conduct graveside services at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road,
Madison, Indiana with interment to follow. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and Major Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the
American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made at the Lytle Welty Funeral Home or below.
