"I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." John 14:27
On November 11, 1942, Jerry Kaigler was the only child born to the late Ora Watkins and Jason Kaigler in Bogalusa, Louisiana. In accordance with the promise of God's Word, he transitioned from labor to reward on Monday, October 7, 2024.
Jerry attended Alabama A&M University for one semester on a football scholarship before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps where he went on to serve starting in February 1964 during the height of the Vietnam War before his Honorable Discharge in February 1968. His service in the Marines was highlighted by such attainments as the rank of Sergeant, and several ribbons and medals that included the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and most notably a Purple Heart. He also received the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with two bronze stars for his service during three campaigns while assigned overseas.
Jerry went on to establish a career in law enforcement with the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) with over twenty-six years of service. He was a respected member of his profession and known for his firm and fair response. Jerry retired from MPD at the rank of Sergeant from the 5th District.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jerry was a devoted family man who loved beyond all else, his wife Hattie Sue Kaigler, sons Brian and Jerry, daughter Joan, and grandchildren Ayanna, Brian Jr., Bryanna, and Ava. He was a beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather. His selfless nature made him a cherished and loyal friend to many.
In his free time, Jerry enjoyed fishing and eating at good restaurants, which brought him much joy and relaxation. He was also very involved at his home church, Bogalusa Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he held the positions of Deacon and Elder. Jerry actively contributed as a Sabbath School teacher and very much enjoyed special times during Bible studies with his granddaughter, Ayanna.
Jerry Kaigler is survived by one child, Brian Oliver Kaigler, grandchildren Ayanna, Brian Jr., Bryanna, and Ava., and additional family and friends. Jerry Kaigler will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through his family, friends, and colleagues.
